Jean-Michel Jarre in the Luna Park: the labyrinth of the Gaul
"Welcome to my kitchen," says Jean-Michel Jarre, first in English and then in a more picturesque than understandable Spanish, in one of his many moments at the microphone during his show at Luna Park. Around him, a pile of synthesizers and knobs form a sort of techno trench, as if the Third World War was not going to untie near Normandy but in a galaxy far, far away.
Because although the staging was advanced, it included four screens -one of them that closed and opened like a sliding door in front of Jarre itself- where high-impact visuals happened, and lasers that project from and to the scenario, what sounded was closer to the kitsch futurism of Star Wars than an update of their music to the times that are in the world of electronics. From the unpublished theme of the beginning, an epic melody of high combustion, the show was structured following the patterns of a pop-rock recital and not a rave. Each song had a beginning and an end, and the continuous flow of the tracks was almost nil.
Even when "Webspinner" and "Exit", dedicated to his mother and with a parliament in plan "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be First" (Manic Street Preachers), raised the serious and flirted with house, the ecstasy (wink , wink) lasted the minutes that lasted each song. Accompanied by two musicians who provided digital beats of all kinds, Jarre presented the themes as if they were small irremovable objects and independent of each other, museum pieces for a distant contemplation. Placed in succession, "Brick England" and "Architecture" were pure contrast: while the first one became melodic, with the synth pop load of the Pet Shop Boys and human silhouettes projected on the screens, the second was pure rhythm and straight lines.
