I heard Dreyfus really liked the jazz mood and had it released without JM's permission, which was in fact the reason why they split up after all.
And the other thing I heard was like you mention, JMJ put something together to end his contract, which wouldn't make sense to me, because they had a great great collaboration. And besides, Francis Rimbert recalls they had great fun recording the album...
So if it was me, I would stick to the first story. But then again, nothing is ever officially confirmed, and both parties will say they other is guilty, as usual in a conflict, so it might be very hard to figure out what exactly made the two of them split up.
