At this point I've given up on Jarre's music to ever sound good again and only to sound like utter garbage in the digital release, and occasionally also on the vinyl release. I still can not get over the fact that:
They used an aging and (seemingly) rotting tape for the remaster of Rendez-Vous and had to recall the print and release a new one.
Oxygene 2 (7-13) sounds as bad as it does these days, even the vinyl absolutely blew chunks with the sound quality varying wildly, especially in Oxygene 8.
Ethnicolor having the timing transition being messed up again.
There's missing audio layers on Geometry of Love.

And there's so much more. I honestly feel like this has been going through the motions for the past decade and a half or so. Even more so the past decade which has really pushed these issues to the forefront.
27-11-10: Ahoy Rotterdam
22-11-16: Heineken Music Hall Amsterdam

Agree that there is something not right here. Given how often JMJ makes a big thing around sound quality and sound experiences as part of his musical offer - for example, 5.1 (Aero) and now Binaural (WTTOS, Amazonia, Oxymore) - it seems that he lacks an attention to detail over these other aspects. When I listen to the Oxygene Trilogy, the change in quality between Part 6 and Part 7 is shocking. The harshness and loudness of 7-13 in contrast the other parts really stands out.

The Dadwater reissue mastering has been an unmitigated disaster, absolutely agree. It's shocking how such shoddy work is allowed pass muster, but it's all about economics. Pass off new packaging and a 'new' remaster as something new to purchase. The most troubling aspect of this is that JMJ (or at least Aero management) know about these issues. They have been contacted and told about it directly.

I wonder if this is because JmJ has his fingers in so many pies Not music related that it's just too many things to take on board and mastering is just one of those too many things.

Whereas JmJ in 1970s music was everything for him.

Also I wonder is it age related. I don't know how it feels to be in 60years 70years : is it just that at those ages it becomes more and more difficult to take on board the nitty gritty of things.

DEATHPACT is one of the most interesting projects in electronic music right now, and I really wanted them on-board since our last collaboration. BRUTALISM REPRISE is out Friday. Pre-Save now

Is it even remotely similar to the original track?

Syncopated lead is unnecessary makes it too mid 90s sounding.
It's the background stuff that's interesting.

Incidentally Orient Express is the precursor to the mid 90s syncopated dance trance lead melodies from musicians as Faithless.
