Richard-Eastham wrote: Tue Mar 28, 2023 3:36 pm Off the back of this thread, I've just been listening to Equinoxe Pt. 4 (Extended Mix) from the Rarities Vol 3 collection:

Q1: Is the extended mix played a higher tempo than the album edit? It certainly sounds "faster" to my ear
Q2: Was it produced contemporaneously with the album? Did Michel Geiss have a hand in the mix/recording? Or did it come later, some years after the 1978 release?
Not just higher tempo, it's also in different key (one semitone higher), so a full-blown "sped-up tape" effect. If you slow it down by approx. 5% it will sound very much like the album version.

Not to throw the writer of that comment under the bus, it's legit great they hold it in that high of a regard, but...
I honestly always forget that Part 6 on the albums happens, not to dismiss it outright, it's a decent tracks, but it just feels like a no man's land on the album.
It's simply sandwiched between the very upbeat Part 5 and, the highlight of the B side and absolute masterpiece of, Part 7.

Oh, I love love LOVE part 6. Firstly because it reminds me of the 8bit MSX game tunes. Secondly because at first listening it is a really simple tune, there is so much happening in that track under the surface. I can play it six times in a row and not get tired of it.

Part 6 is often sadly overlooked, but I find it a brilliant fun piece. I think that the random "plinks", "plonks" and beeps towards the end of the piece (as it starts to transform into the bassline of Part 7) allude to the sound of rain to tie in with the thunder of Parts 5 and 8.

The Doctor Mix Youtube video about Equinoxe (which was widely shared about a year ago) has made me appreciate Part 6 even more. For me, the whole of Part 5 - 6 and the first (best known) section of Part 7 remain my favourite body of music that JMJ has ever produced.

Oh yes, for me it's probably not the best, but it's absolutely up there.

I love that 5-6-7 suite as well. As I mentioned at least once JMJ tried to repeat this with Equinoxe Infinity movements 6-7-8, but ultimately failed, as

1) the transitions between tracks are way too short
2) the intro to Mvt7 is missing one 1/16th note, making the next section (00:20) start abruptly and throwing (at least me) off the rhythm. I had to insert that note back so that I can listen to it.
3) for some odd reason Mvt6 has a BPM of 100, while 7 and 8 have BPM of 97.5.
4) in general the tracks are too different

Also Mvt7 was originally conceived as a very different track, much more hypnotic like the original Equinoxe 6/7. You can hear remnants of the original bass sequence (similar to Equinoxe 7 but different enough to hand-wave "self-parody") from 01:38. That bass transitions to Mvt8 nicely, although as I said the transition is just too short to make it as satisfying as the Eq5-6-7 suite.

JMJ was convinced by Michel Geiss to keep Equi7.
JMJ was also convinced by Michel Geiss to keep Rend4.

I wonder what tracks would have taken their place if JMJ didn't keep them.

I still feel Analogue synths is JMJ's bread and butter. JMJ can do Analogue synthesis in his sleep. Desinging Analogue synth sounds. Layering interweaving Analogue synth sounds JMJ's speciality.
However Digital harware synths JMJ is just not that comfortable with them it shows sometimes I think.
Software synths JMJ is more at ease with.
The Digital hardware systems JMJ was is at ease with I feel are Digital Samplers : Fairlight, Akai, Technos Acxel resampler.

I never quite found 6/7/8 in Infinity to really pull off and the transition from 5/6/7 being rather abrupt, and now that I've put up again due to this post and yeah...
I was never able just explain why it felt off, now I flat out hear why it feels off... Well, this blows

There's one more thing although it's only annoying when you listen to Mvt7 separately - the first quarter beat is missing because it is for some odd reason glued to the ending of Mvt6 (two bass notes, D and a D one octave higher).

I think I need to make my fixed versions public somehow

Returning to Equinoxe.

Equinoxe 3 is one of the highest peaks in Electronic music history for me.
The way the sounds are layered together, their interweaving, the sounds themselves.

Oxygene 9 showed JMJ can do this in his sleep.

Hello everyone , and I apologize if my post is in the wrong place .
A great desire of mine , for a long time, is to be able to reproduce as much as possible , on my Yamaha PSR-S home organ , the song Equinoxe 4 by Jean Michel Jarre .
I recently found a video on youtube in which a boy presents that sound like an R2-D2 or alien robot on a much less pretentious organ , but better performing than mine ->
That boy is no longer to be found , unfortunately for him ...

I'm not 100% sure, but from my recent searches, the result would be that the robot-like sound present in the video above, would be the "PressPan SamplHold" from the Roland D-50 ...

I realized , that , listening to a demo sample , on this website https://www.synthmania.com/pn-d50-04.htm , with this tone "PressPan SamplHold" here https://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20PN- ... plHold.mp3
I think it would be the most suitable to imitate on our home organs , that voice like an alien or robot R2-D2 , from the song Equinoxe 4 by Jean Michel Jarre .

But original sound from Equinoxe 4 ??? Can someone explain to us at least the origin, from which synthesizer or the original sound, which is ???
Please , is there someone on this forum who can help us with at least a clarification , if not someone with a big heart , who can upload it , in any format ... or at least let us know what tone or sound should we look for on the internet for this sound ???

Does anyone know how to make this sound , like a robot ( R2-D2 maybe ) ... or alien sound in Equinoxe 4 by Jean Michel Jarre ???
I need the sound or this any sound at least close to the original , for playng on my Yamaha PSR - Please !!!

P.S.
Sorry for my english ! THANKS !!!

I don't know how to recreate the sound but the original sound was done with an ARP 2600.

Happy 46th anniversary to Jean-Michel Jarre’s fourth studio album, Equinoxe!

Nowadays this album is regarded as a true classic in every way, but its legacy in the fanbase still seems a bit unfair to the album, because many fans just think of this album as „an other Oxygene”. And yes, in terms of instrumentation, it’s definitely close to Jarre’s most famous work, but we should also remember how different it is in many ways. In my personal opinion, Equinoxe is actually even better than Oxygene.

First of all, on Equinoxe, Jarre wanted to create a totally different take on electronic music. If we really take a closer look, Equinoxe was the first album of ’modern French Electronica’. Unlike the some of the more repetitive sequences on Oxygene, the concept of Equinoxe was to make an album from constantly evolving sounds. Jarre wanted everything to keep changing, evolving, creating a totally different take on electronic music compared to the repetitive, rigid German version, Equinoxe has more emotional and melodic substance, but at the same time, Equinoxe also has a more dynamic, more intensly rhythmic approach compared to – for example – Italian or Greek electronic music of end of the 70s. Oxygene was already a step towards this direction, but Jarre mastered it on Equinoxe.
Therefore, unlike on Oxygene, the sequencing on Equinoxe was done almost totally by hands to keep it evolving. Jarre even said that for this album, he used waves as an example. He said that in the water, you see waves being formed again and again, but they are never exactly the same. Watching the water is boring if someone just plays the same wave again and again, but the actual waves are never boring, because they are constantly evolving, changing.

So Equinoxe was a new, specifically French way of making electronic music. This is why it took Jarre 8 months to produce Equinoxe, while it only took him 1,5 months to create Oxygene. One one hand, Equinoxe is more richer on a melodic level, on the other hand, the pacing is more intense when you compare it to Oxygene. This approach is still part of French electronica, just listen to artists like French 79, M83 or Rone.

But the most amazing thing about Equinoxe and the real reason why I think it’s a perfect album is the fantastic album structure. On Oxygene, you have the more melodic & rhythmic tracks and the more atmospheric tracks, that back and forth between the „sunnier” and „darker” tracks – as Jarre calls them – could go on forever. But Equinoxe was specifically created to work as one big unity of music. It has a beginning, it starts slowly, it gets more intense, it gives you variations and finally, it reaches the highest, most cathertic point, before finally coming back to Earth and giving closure. Equinoxe isn’t just a collection of tracks, but it’s basically one, 37 minute long song.

The struture of Equinoxe is exactly how one good single track should be like structured: A short intro (E1), slow build-up (E2-3), a tune (E4), variations (E5), more build-up (E6) and finally, the best, most intense, most cathartic, most dynamic high point, Equinoxe 7. Everything on the albums feel like it prepares you for E7, the longest, most complex track, right before the final song. Even the song itself has an inner high point, that final key change. And after that, it gives you a ’goodbye’, a closing track (E8). Just like how a single track could do. Many 6 or 8 minte electronic tracks have similar structure to this album. This is just utterly brilliant, in my opinion. No other Jarre album has a structure like this.

Equinoxe is the ultimate analogue space music album. It’s perfectly understandable that after Equinoxe, Jarre gave up on analog space music making forever. Jean-Michel Jarre never wants to do something that he thinks was perfected already. If he is done with a certain style, he moves on. After Oxygene, he clearly felt that he still has some work to do with this space music style. After Equinoxe, he was done, he finished and moved on from his „classic style”. He probably felt that what he created is everthing he could do with these instruments, in this style and it’s time do something else. Then, he got his Fairlight CMI and the rest is history.
