MEET - Digital Culture Center
Viale Vittorio Veneto 2, Milan

"We are analog animals in the digital age"
Jean-Michel Jarre returns to MEET on April 11, 2025 at 11.00 to tell us about his 2025 Italian Season, between exhibitions and concerts in Milan, Venice and Pompeii.
Three Italian stages make up a total work that transmutes technological tools into unpublished artistic media.
His creative triad - Promptitude at MEET awakening the poetic algorithm, 3D sound as an architectural element at the Biennale, two singular live site-specific performances in exceptional UNESCO heritage sites in Pompeii and Venice - becomes a cultural journey to the intersection between poetry and algorithm, where the sound narrative penetrates visual art in a continuous transformative dialogue.

"In preparation for his other project, an exhibition entitled 'Promptitude' to be held in Milan, Italy, during the months of June, July, and August, Jean-Michel Jarre delves deeply into the relationship between the prompt and its intrinsic poetry. He examines the visual outcome achieved, demonstrating the level of control an artist can exert over AI: 'I maintain that what I have done is entirely my own creation, because little by little I managed to “trick the machine” in order to achieve the desired result.'"

Jean-Michel Jarre's challenge: "The AI is a brush 3.0"
The composer talks about his "total work": two exhibitions and two concerts, one of which in Pompeii
He doesn't make a fold and immediately says: "Mys will be a total work, I think you can really call it that". He is Jean Michel Jarre, probably the most legendary among the composers of electronic music and certainly also the kindest: "The privilege of artists is to be heard, I don't understand those who behave as unreachable divies". He has the story of unreachable. He is one of the very few children of art who have become more famous than his fathers (his, Maurice, won the Oscar in 1962 for the soundtrack of Lawrence of Arabia) and remains the only one who has no clones because, since the 1976 album Oxygene, others forget his style. So now, here at a Meet table in Milan, he lights up when he talks about his "total work" composed of three stages.
The first is Oxyville, an immersive musical installation created with the artistic coordination of Maria Grazia Mattei and inspired by the album Oxymore. To summarize, from May 10 to November 23, Oxyville will be part of the nineteenth International Exhibition of Architecture at the Venice Biennale with a 360-degree sound to explore the connection between 3D audio and architectural space. The second stage is Promptitude, which from June 12 to September 7 will be at the Meet Digital Culture Center in Milan: "It is my first exhibition of visual works", he explains that he will try, through the creative use of textual prompts, to guide artificial intelligence in the creation of portraits ("prompt" is literally the symbol that appears on the computer monitor to signal that the system is waiting for a command, ed). «Artificial intelligence is not a threat, it depends on how man uses it. It's a sort of brush 3.0, it can paint crap or masterpieces, so, on second thought, there's also a poetic dimension in the Ia».
Jarre, who will turn 77 on August 24, talks about it with the enthusiasm of a debutant, he who was the first Westerner to perform in China and who even invented a virtual New Year's Eve concert. And this one is nice to remember: in 2020 Jarre played in his studio but the images appeared on a screen near Notre-Dame in Paris. Result: 75 million viewers. This is also why the third stage of his "Total Work" has an added value: it will be live. Jean Michel Jarre will perform on July 3 in St. Mark's Square in Venice and on July 5 at the Amphitheater of the Excavations of Pompeii. «Pompei is probably the first example of immersive art», he explains before adding that «in twenty years this historical moment will be remembered as a golden age, a creative avant-garde similar to that of the first silent or black and white film directors». Not surprisingly, looking at his creative horizons, he remembers that Fellini and Visconti were his first "mentors". «In the end even Fellini with Nino Rota and Sergio Leone with Ennio Morricone did total works in their own way».
Speaking of complete music, in 2026 his masterpiece Oxygene will turn half a century old. "But I don't want a neo-nostalgic celebration.
So I was about to marry Charlotte Rampling and I remember that, after listening to Oxygene on a break on the set in Iceland, she told me: This music can be all or nothing. With that music now I would like to recreate something that is again out of the ordinary, I will be a thief of myself».

Concert-event by Jean-Michel Jarre as part of the BOP - Beats of Pompeii festival. Immersive performance in the extraordinary setting of the Pompeii Excavation Amphitheater.
From May to November 2025
The total work arrives in Italy
JEAN-MICHEL JARRE
between art music and artificial intelligence
The legendary French electronic composer brings his 360° artistic vision to Italy. MILAN, VENICE and POMPEI will host installations, exhibitions and concerts combined by an innovative thread: experimentation between analog and digital for a memorable immersive experience.
[Milan, April 11, 2025] Jean-Michel Jarre returns to Italy in style, announcing an Italian season conceived as a total work in the broadest sense: a journey through sound, image and artificial intelligence that will involve the legendary 360° composer in his most eclectic dimension. From May to November, its route will wind through Milan, Venice and Pompeii, interweaving installations, exhibitions and concerts in an unprecedented immersive experience.
Pioneer of technological experimentation, Jarre continues to explore the dialogue between analog and digital, between real and virtual, pushing the boundaries of art and music. This Italian season aims to be a celebration of his research, but even more an invitation to the public to let themselves be transported to a universe where artificial intelligence becomes a poetic and generative tool, capable of transforming the perception of space and time.
A project with multiple languages but with a single architect: Jean-Michel Jarre, who continues to reinvent the art of sound and image in the digital age. This Italian season presents itself as an immersive trip in three stages that invites the public to explore the future of creativity through the synergy between man and machine.
FIRST STAGE: OXYVILLE - ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL 2025 AND ITS PRESENTATION AT MEET
From May 10 to November 23, 2025, Jean-Michel Jarre was invited to the 19th International Exhibition of Architecture of the Venice Biennale, entitled "Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.", edited by Carlo Ratti. The artist will present Oxyville, an immersive musical installation created with the artistic coordination of Maria Grazia Mattei and MEET Digital Culture Center.
Oxyville is an electronic musical creation inspired by Jean-Michel Jarre's album Oxymore. Designed in 360° spatialized sound, the work explores the connection between 3D audio and architectural space, where sound becomes the primary material for building an imaginary city.
The Venetian experience will culminate in November with a concluding event at the MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan, where a performance of what Oxyville visitors have experienced will be presented, in an audio-visual dialogue in which both the artist and the public are protagonists.
SECOND STAGE: PROMPTITUDE – EXHIBITION AT THE MEET DIGITAL CULTURE CENTER
From June 12 to September 7, 2025, the MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan - the first International Center for Art and Digital Culture in Italy, born in Milan with the support of the Cariplo Foundation and founded by Maria Grazia Mattei - will host Promptitude, the first exhibition of visual works by Jean-Michel Jarre. A return of the artist to MEET in what he himself called "a beacon that intercepts ideas and in turn spreads them" and that he chose as a place to show this work that is proposed as an exploration of the man-machine relationship, through the creative use of textual prompts to guide the AI in the creation of portraits of humanoid creatures. Prompt that he himself sees as haiku for AI: short and powerful instructions that give life to unprecedented visual worlds. The exhibition will be enriched by the generative sound composition Eōn, which will continuously evolve, offering an immersive environment in constant transformation.
THIRD STAGE: THE EXTRAORDINARY CONCERTS-LIVE EVENTS IN ST. MARK'S SQUARE IN VENICE AND AT THE POMPEII EXCAVATION AMPHITHEATER
The first scheduled stage is that of July 3, 2025, in the extraordinary setting of St. Mark's Square in Venice, a place where Jarre has always dreamed of performing. The event is organized by Veneto Jazz with Influxus, Eventi Verona and Concerto, in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice and Vela, as part of the 17th edition of the Venice Jazz Festival.

Is this Oxyville from the Oxymore VR shows? Is it an official thing now? The immersive 360 degrees sound installation is still Oxymore or is it something new?

I understand he's dusted off the original Oxyville VR world and is relaunching it as an exhibit at the Venice Architecture Biennale. No changes from the 2022 version as far as I can tell.
