OK then let me be specific; optical media, like CD's, DVD's and Blu Ray, will be obsolete in the near future.

Slightly off-topic and beside the point and not trying to make a point anyway - just a warning from one who's recently lost ALL the shit gathered in the past year (and I'm talking important stuff, with NO backup) because of a crashed hard disk, trust me: you WILL want to backup your stuff on optical drives as well.

P.S. and yes, ill-fate CAN and WILL make BOTH your hard drives crash (either from the same reason or from different reasons, even if one is internal, the other external...)

A very good and valid point.

We may bang on about MP3 this, digital that, downloaded this, that and the other, but at the end of the day, it can ALL be lost within a matter of seconds. Even todays DVDs and CDs have limited life.

But hard-drives will become non-mechanical, therefor more reliable. You will stream films directly on your TV or preferred set-top box in HD, or save 'em on said drives. Physical media for music, films, video games, etc., will become obsolete. It's the future, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

Enjoy downloading 60GB HD movie data, especially when the whole 3D catches on. OK, digital distribution has its advantages, but saying physical media will become obsolete is nonsense. Look at the vinyl record market: it's growing, whereas 10 years ago people thought it was dead.

I would have agreed with you 100% 3 years ago, but then my harddisk with all my digitized Jean Michel Jarre videotapes crashed. 5 years of work was gone, just at the moment I wanted to backup all the recordings. It could be repaired though, but that was expensive.
