Exept for sounds from the crowd of course.
The mics indeed would be used to pick up the crowd's applause and maybe the sound of the hall (albeit low in the final mixdown).

Not to hurry the professional Aero Prod, but when do they consider to tell something; what about new dates??

I am guessing the tickets will be up for sale before we get any official info. It's only a guess and I could be Image. Most artists use this kind of scenario. :fine:

Report from Oslo

Hey gang,

I'm a little late with my report from Oslo, but it may be useful for those attending the next stage of the tour, or want to read a write-up. My report, with some pics and a theory about the lack of projections can be found here:

http://news.planetorigo.com/article.php ... cle_id=456

I have not found any major media reports from Oslo yet, so this may be the only one!

No, it won't be the only media report. My interview with Jarre will be published in the next issue of Musikkpraksis :)

In the article, Jarre explains why he didn't include projections. He said that he didn't want the concert to feel like you were sitting at home watching television. He wanted the music be at the centre stage, without any visuals distracting from them. Personally I didn't miss them.

I agree with what you write in the article that the set list was a bit too predictable. However, I loved that he included Variations III. It's the best piece he has done in years.

Oxygene V could be dropped, though. Soloing is just not Jarre's strong point...

Jarre also told me that he would be composing while on the road, and that he had done things in a totally opposite way this time. He tours before a new album is released. The album will be released during the tour, and there is also a possibility that there will be a yet another greatest hits record out.

I will post an English translation of my interview, which will also include all the stuff that I had to drop from the printed version, on this forum in the next few weeks.

Yes, that's what you keep saying, but..... hehe, just teasing, good job to get JMJ into Musikkpraksis.

That's what he has said before too, which led me to my conclusion (which is in my report). That, coupled with actually seeing the concert in person, made the concert feel much more organic and alive and tangible than watching a video wall, which I think work better in an outdoor setting where you have much more space to work with.

Jarre has made it a habit of touring or performing without a new album out; 1995, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 (forget T&T, it was Oxygene in Marigny and no *new* album out), 2008 and now 2009..... (remix albums, side projects and live CDs not counted). So I dont think the idea is too strange for him, although for any normal artist, it only makes sense to tour when you have a new album out.

He he. The photos that will be used in the article are the same that I linked to previously in this thread.

Doh! Now I see it! Somehow I managed to skip that paragraph in your article when I read it earlier today. One Page Down too many, I guess.

Hmm, well I wouldn't say he has a habit of touring without a new album out. One off concerts, yes, but not touring. Both EiC and the 1997 tour were in support of albums. And the Oxygene tour last year was in support of the re-recording.

I think Jarre's main point was that he actually would be composing and releasing an album during the tour, which certainly is a new thing for him.

I browsed Planet Origo now, and I see that you've written a couple of articles about this.

Jakob BC wrote:Well for an outdoor concert, the video effects help making the surroundings a part of the show. Usually Jarre's audience is so huge that it's difficult to reach out to all parts of it. The focus on lights and visuals are just better suited for an outdoor concert.
That, and the simple fact that with an indoor concert, the space, distance and size that you (JMJ) can work with is limited and every visual effect competes with whatever else is in the view. You cant have powerful beams in your face *and* try to watch a video at the same time. On the other hand, he could have shut off everything else and just displayed a video. However, that would have been TV again. A concert is not TV, it is something very different and JMJ deserve credit for making a point of that, even if some people get bored.

The outdoor concerts are designed to work on many levels, not just because the audience far back needs something to see, but artistic levels too. The projections, wether they are video or slides, have usually been more specific and iconic and sometimes narrative, while skytrackers and fireworks are more symbolic and representative. I remember in Gdansk, when Souvenir of China was dedicated to the late Pope (I think that was the case), video images of the Pope were shown on the walls while calm, red fireworks rised above the buildings. The fireworks were perhaps the most emotional part of that segment, as they gave a feeling of dignity.

I am sure Jarre takes things like this into account when designing a show - it's not just about flashing lights in sync with music.
