I heard it on the radio news today.
Me and my relatives use to watch this guy on channel Animal Planet.
For me this "accident" wasn't tootally unexpected...but still very sad. :?

I was never a big fan of him, but it's still very sad when someone dies.

Ergo I think it's sad when someone dies. But at the same time, it's no surprise, when people are challenging fate like that. A lot of what he did was very dangerous, and the risk of dying because of it was very high.

I can fully understand Androids point of view. I think I kind of agree too...

Not swimming with stingrays. If he was attacked by a crocodile I could understand what you are saying, but it just isn't very dangerous to swim with stingrays. It was a freak accident.

He said himself that, the crocodile was not a threat or dangerous in any ways to his child. Everybody who are doing such things can say so, but I don't think he is stupid in that way.
Like it was mentioned, they were not shooting for the program at the moment where he was stabbed, so maybe he wasn't aware of the ray attack.

We are not equipped to survive in such an environment and are as much fishbait as the rest of the fish in the water,it may not be common of attacks from Stingrays, but thats like saying because dogs are used to human contact they are less likely to bite!!animals do not have Human instincts and deal with threat as they are so equipped if a dog feels threatend it will bite irrespective of human contact

a stingray has a defence mechanism, like a shark or crocodile has thats how they survive sadly they dont know the difference between moral judgement and danger,so retaliate according to threat,so why would a croc be any more dangerous than a stingray!!!we can only survive situations like that with Human invention(ie weapons) we have no survival or defence mechanism to enable use to defend in such marine situations other than to swim.

Would you step into a tank of Great white sharks just because human attack is few and far between!!!when you step out of your own environment you have to expect the unexpected a fish cannot determine between species and only survive in a pecking order, in a foodchain we maybe top of the foodchain in our world, but in a different ecological situation we are not...and there is only the survival of the fittest.
The stingray in question obvioulsy felt threatend and retaliated hows it evolved to survive, nothing more. its a not a freak accident, these kinds of attacks from stingrays obviously happen all the time within its own foodchain, its just that average humans dont put themselves in that situation, except for ecologists like Mr Irwin so to say its a freak accident is rubbish,he put himself in that situation so he had a 50/50 chance of being attacked..

the more you put yourself in dangerous environments the greater the risk of injury or in this case death....

Well that's my point. If he were swimming with incredibly dangerous animals like crocodiles or alligators I could see why he died. It's just that swimming with Stingrays isn't dangerous, hundreds of people do it every year. So it isn't his fault that he has copped it. If he were with dangerous animals then it would have been his fault for being near dangerous animals.

It's a bit uncertain what did really happen but this is from CNN:

Irwin was in the area to film pieces for a show called "The Ocean's Deadliest" with Philippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques, according to Irwin's manager and friend John Stainton. But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, Stainton said, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi.

"He came over the top of a stingray that was buried in the sand, and the barb came up and hit him in the chest," Stainton said.

Wildlife documentary maker Ben Cropp, citing a colleague who saw footage of the attack, told Time.com that Irwin had accidentally boxed the animal in. "It stopped and twisted and threw up its tail with the spike, and it caught him in the chest," said Cropp. "It's a defensive thing. It's like being stabbed with a dirty dagger."

Well...tragic it is.

.

Flying is supposedly one of the safest modes of transport but there are always tragedies!!!for every safe journey.Death from a Stingray may be few and far between, but 1 death is enough to assess the risk as dangerous

So too do people swim in the same waters as killer sharks and Crocodiles but dont get harmed.Anything that has the potential to kill you either in self defence or for food is dangerous.irrespective of its placid nature otherwise..if you put yourself in that situation then you'll get injured sooner or later
Shark reports of killing Humans are few and far between but again 1000's people get mamed and killed by them each year.
Would you still get into the water with a stingray after this fatal tragedy...I wouldn't get in the water with one before so nothing is 100% safe.I know the danger and do not put myself into such territory as its far too unpredictable and volatile

read here:

Again an Animal/Mammal is unpredictable because it can only distuinguish between threat, not moral obligation that is why they are equipped with such deadly weaponry!!Steve Irwins death is a tragedy but again he knew the risk,he didnt disturb it intentionally but again that is part of the Rays self defence mechanism being camouflaged something that we as humans have to be aware of, a shark or crocodile is more likely to kill you given you step into its territory due to the foodchain,so a ray doesnt feed on your typical human so is not considered a direct food threat but again it still can kill you so swimming with rays is Dangerous even if the law of averages for killing humans is low!!!

I guess he knew about the risks he took, and that this could happen a day!

In a way he played with his own life!
