Man, 32nd anniversary of this performance today... always preferred it to the original version, tbh ;)

It's a great version. The French single version is close to this one, but the live version has more effects.

Which one? The "alternate mix" that we spoke about a while back? Nah. The Trocadero version is a different animal. Different beat, different bass notes, electric bass replaced with synth bass, strings and piano removed.

As I see it, both the alternate mix and the CD single version are inbetween versions as it were. As if they were crafting the ultimate version and released an alpha on CD and a beta as a single. It has some of the elements the Trocadero version has.

Isn't the CD version merely a shortened edit of the album version?

The German & UK releases are, the French CD single isn't.

Oh, so the one in this one (UK) is a shortened album version (as seen on the sleeve as opposed to the 4:25 length on the page itself), then there's the French/alternate version (which has some of the Trocadero bassline going at around 2:00) - and I guess the long version is just the album one

The first link you gave is indeed a slightly shortened version of the regular album track, the French CD single (link 2) has an alternative version/remix and the French 12" (your 3rd link) has a slightly longer remix version of the French CD single (or the French CD single is slightly edited).

But you said " both the alternate mix and the CD single version". If you are talking about "alternate mix" and "French CD single version" then you're talking about the same track then?

Well, I meant both versions as in the version on the French CD and the version on the French 12", which are almost the same, except the CD single is an edit.

Is it a different one than the one uploaded on YouTube here?

... which, come to think of it, just sounds like one of the album CD versions anyway so it's probably not an actual rip.

Now I have to pick up my own 12" to check.

Well, I did.
The 12" is a slightly longer version than the French CD single version. So the French CD single contains the French 7" remix and the French 12" remix is unique for the format.

The edit is subtle. The 2nd "verse" of the song is a bit longer. It is the same as the one in the video a few posts above me.
