CONDUCTOR OF THE MASSES - Issue 26/27 - 2000 (double issue - final issue)

This is the last issue of a fantastic fan based magazine that ran for 10 years, 1990 to 2000. Starting from a humble fanzine to become a superb full colour glossey professional publication, that is now sadly missed.

Just inspired to name it Conductor of the Masses.

As first edition was before mass Internet, how did people find out there was going to be a fanzine magazine.

Where was it announced there was going to be a fanzine magazine.

Music magazines like Record Collector, record fairs, BBC Ceefax probably (the BBC teletext service), etc. I know the Dutch TV had ads for fanclubs on teletext (page 372, hittext

I was amazed when I first saw a copy of COTM fanzine. I was a JMJ fan but the music press in the UK at that time effectively ignored him. I had a sense I was his only fan; it was a lonely time! A friend of mine bought a copy from a local record shop. I then subscribed and received it mail order. Some of my letters were published by COTM in 1992 and 93 and then Mark Gidley (editor) kindly invited me to contribute some articles in 1994 and 95. I was thrilled to see my name in print in a JMJ fanzine!

So, it's been great to see Mark's name appear alongside official concert photos from Bratislava and this summer's tour.

About the COTM name: I recall a letters page in one issue, where Mark had to explain that the "Conductor" wasn't him or the fanzine and that "the Masses" weren't his army of subscribers

.... but JMJ and the millions that attend his concerts.

I also loved the original fanzine logo - the simplified JMJ image of just glasses and long hair - based on the La Défense concert laser projections.

I wonder whether advert was taken out in NME in uk. I recall Teletex on bbc, itv, channel 4, maybe was advertised on channel4 teletext.

I'm trying to wrap my head around

how on earth people found out about COTM first issue.

It's a brilliant name COTM I immediately got that it referred to JMJ.
Clever clear logo. JMJ should adopted it. Like Michael Jackson had a logo of his legs in a dance move.

Would you link from Jon's upload links to the issues your articles were in. I would enjoy reading them.

Would be neat if Mark would share how he got the word out on the first issue, also how the interviews happened.
