Gdansk honoured Walesa and Jarre
Ex-president, the legendary leader of "Solidarity" - Lech Walesa and the French musician Jean Michel Jarre became the winners of the plebiscite "Gdanszczanin Roku" ("Man of The Year in Gdansk"). The results were announced during the "Gdansk Gala" organized as a part of The Second World Congress Of Gdansk Inhabitants.
Lech Walesa personally attended the gala, Jean Michel Jarre is going to receive his prize on 12th June. Ex-president emphasized that he has been already connected with Gdansk for nearly 40 years.
"I chose this city and now this city is choosing me, is anything more needed to be happy? In 1967 in May I have come to Gdansk, it will have been my 40th anniversary next year. Here I've met my lovely wife, with whom I have children, my grandchildren live here, so just good things" - Walesa said before being given the designation.
Choice of the "Man of The Year" could have been made by voting on city department's website or sending the coupon which was in one of the local newspapers.
Gdansk is celebrating
For the occasion of The Second World Congress of Gdansk Inhabitants there are exhibitions, concerts and so on being organized.
On Thursday there was a solemn meeting of Gdansk Polonia and Gdansk's Friends Association arranged. The congress finishes on 4th June. It was previously expected to take place the week before but because of the Benedict's XVI visit in Poland it was decided to postpone it.
Organizers planned i.a. the concert of Jan Garbarek Group, show containing of music, lights and pyrotechnic elements entitled "Magical city Gdansk" prepared by Slawomir Losowski, and performances of groups such as Golden Life, Kowalski, H2O, Blenders.
During the night 3th/4th June the restaurants, cafeterias, bars and museums are going to be open in Gdansk. Cinema fans are going to be able to watch review of feature films connected with Gdansk, i.e. Stanislaw Rózewicz's "Wolne Miasto" ("Free City") from 1958, and "Westerplatte" from 1967, Janusz Morgenstern's "Do widzenia, do jutra" ("Goodbye, see you tomorrow") from 1960, Andrzej Wajda's "Czlowiek z Zelaza" ("Iron man") from 1981 or Robert Glinski's "Wrózby Kumaka" ("Tha call of the toad") from 2005."
