Conclusion: the very first CD master from 1983 (red face polydor CD) is the best ?

I'll do anyother one with Oxygene soon, and I'll wash my vinyls before ripping them this time :)
What 's a good track for comparison? Oxygene 2?

10 is laughably bad (the thunder...omg), the quality of 11 shocked me, seeing where it comes from.

I think 07 is from 1989, the Annees Laser set had catalog numbers from the "international" Polydor numbering, but I'm not sure.

I'll try to get a hold on the 1983 german CD and the 1985 german CD, to see if they're mastered differently than number 5.

Is this the same as the 1983 red-face CD?

Image

It's from the 1987 10th anniversary cd-set.
Interesting and fun experiment 1906. Oxygene part 2 is a nice idea. An other mini-pops. ;)
I'd guess Oxygene part 4 would give us too many versions to choose from in one day.

Updated the first post accordingly, as now we have a first consensus view winner. :) Thanks for your efforts!

Oxygene 2 would be a good choice, I think, especially around the part with the Eminent plucks.

Pretty good guessing, well except the Japanese vinyl. I own that myself and recognized the remastering (though still wasn't entirely sure). Really amazing how many different sounding masters there are. I truly hope Jarre himself ever remasters the albums. He should be the only one too be able to create a master that sounds like it should...

According to Discogs, that catalogue number is shared by quite many CD editions in the 1980s, so I guess it should have the same content.

As for the latest samples, well, it's settled that my ears really can't discern most vinyl editions from each other. So I'm guessing sample nr. 10 is either MFSL or the 1997 Sony one :P

Nr. 4 might be a USA vinyl again?

It's difficult this time. They're really close, not so much difference as Equinoxe 5 had.

My guess is that 10 is the New Master Recording.
So far my favorites are 2, 3, 14, worst is 4 and 5. But this is only based on the fact I can hear the twinkling more on the first mentioned ones.

File by Phil... :pwned:
[hide]01 - Vinyl : ++ (a little bit of crackle but the sound is ok)
02 - CD : ++ (1987 Digitaly Remastered ?)
03 - CD : ++ (1994 MFSL ?)
04 - Vinyl : - (a little bit muffled)
05 - Vinyl : (+)
06 - CD : + (Loud - 1997 Scott Hull ? )... 06 = 20 ?
07 - Vinyl : +
08 - Vinyl : (+)
09 - Vinyl : +
10 - CD : + or ++ (LOUD x10.. but i make an exception -> 2007 "New Master Recording" :-))
11 - Vinyl : (+)
12 - Vinyl : (-)
13 - Vinyl : +
14 - Vinyl : +
15 - Vinyl : ?? :-\
16 - Vinyl : (+)
17 - Vinyl : (+)
18 - Vinyl : ++
19 - Vinyl : (+)
20 - CD : + (Loud - 1997 Scott Hull ? )... 20 = 06, same disc ?[/hide]

My favorites (not easy... most of them have the same dynamic range and sound similar) :

- Vinyl -> 01 (or 18)
- CD -> 02 (or 03, i think that Oxygene MFSL is better than Equinoxe MFSL)........ And 10 at times ^^

Too bad there are only 4 (or 5) CD for 15 vinyls... (There is at less 3 others good "1983-85" cd mastering)
"Oxygene II" on "Musik Aus Zeit Und Raum" CD is also an excellent version to listen to. :-)

In fact the disc "800025-02 01" (Red face) is very different to "800025-02 02", DR12 for both but another mastering.
However "800025-02 03" is the same as "800025-02 02"... "why make it simple when we can make it complicated ?" :nod:

Blimey! So the red face one really is quite the collectible ;)

Also, forgot to list my favorites of the Oxy 2 samples. At the moment I prefer 2, 9 and 12 to the others.

#2 definitely my favourite.

Going through the entire list one by one:

01: Sound really good. The bass line is clear but not to obvious same goes for the twinkling.
02: A bit louder and as a side effect making the bass and twinkling louder also.
03: See two. Sound very much alike. The high notes are ever so slightly less.
04: Balance is all over the place, very loud bass but everything else is very subdued.
05: Sounds basically the same as 01 (just with alot of vinyl clicks/pops).
06: A little too loud for my tastes, but sounds fine otherwise. Maybe a slight reduction of the highs would have been welcome though.
07: Same as 01 again just every so slightly more flat sounding.
08: Same as 01, once again, just every so slightly more bass.
09: Sounds once again very much like 01, sound seems too be overall every so slightly bumped.
10: I stopped listening after a few seconds. This clearly is the New Master Recording. Sounds absolutely terrible compared too anything so far. Loud, terrible bass and the twinkling is just brain numbing... Such a waste of a "New master recording"...
11: See 07.

I'll do the rest later. I can only hear the beeping sounds so many times before it hurts my ears. So far honestly 01 sounds great (and is my personal favorite). It's not perfect, but Oxygene will never really sound perfect due too it's recording background.

Honestly so far most have sounded really good. Assuming most come from far before the remastering process came too be, no?

Ok I've given it a try. I've been working like a dog today so the listening capacity in my brain might not be the best right now.
It's funny if I run cd's in my PC and trying to compare through headphones the CDs doesn't sound as "brutally" unforgiving as these flac files.
Anyhow I don't try to guess vinyl numbers as my Oxy vinyl collection is strictly limited.
Though here are some of my thoughts:

1. vinyl - maybe a bit compressed but overall good
2. CD - sounds very nice (800 015-2 from 1980's)
3. CD - a bit compressed (Sony 1997 Scott Hull remaster)
4. vinyl - shifting sound level
5. vinyl - sounds ok
6. CD - TOO LOUD
7. vinyl - sounds a bit muffled at the beginning
8. vinyl - distorted
9. vinyl - a bit loud
10. CD - Even louder and very compressed, some extra effects added? Reverrbd (New Master Recording 2007)
11. vinyl - sounds good
12. vinyl - A bit loud but sounds ok
13. vinyl - sounds good
14. vinyl - very clear sound (mfsl?)
15. vinyl - a bit distorty and then...very quiet? :)
16. vinyl - Sounds very muffled, infact terrible
17. vinyl - too loud
18. CD - polished yet warm sound, some roughness going on (mfsl udcd 613)
19. vinyl - sounds good
20. CD - too loud

I could be wrong, I could be right. Doesn't matter. This is just fun guessing.
It's hard to say "this is better then that". They all has got different souls and they're good in their own rights. The vinyl sound is much better/cleaner this time 1906. :)
