It's not that she doesn't exist, it's that her role in the band is different until now. You can check the Bratislava and Francofolies concerts to realize this. His role has been to be bass player, guitar player, violin player... not the role of doing arrangements. If you want an example, the tracklist with the same arrangements since 2016 and the recent use of the AERO 2004 versions are there. When you say that at first Rimbert was missed, it's because a lot of people know that Stephane doesn't play what Rimbert play. Apparently, he was more in charge of the production and technical aspects. Can you tell me what Stephane plays on the Electronica Tour? This role he played can be verified by the similarity in the arrangements for the pieces in the Electronica Tour (which many are still using).
I don't get it, honestly. Are those version of Herbalizer or Azimuth or The Time Machine in Francofolies not new arrengements? How can any of us know how she was involved with creating those versions?

There should be evolution and not re-volution in regards to performances.
It goes to each concerts from now on...
I can't believe that the Aero versions have returned in the first place. They were crap when they first came out and that was 20 years ago

Isn't it kind of unbelieveable, right?

If he might come to my country this summer...I will certainly wait for the first concert to see what's what (versions, tracklist, etc)...I swear I don't go if he tours with the same setlist and versions.

Seriously, I'm just curious: what versions are okay for those old tracks?

The AERO versions are bad, right, then the Electronica Tour versions are also not good, I remember all the complaining. The Welcome To The Other Side versions are also not good according to you. He went back to the AERO versions, because he didn't want to use the dance oriented versions, but he still wanted the tracks to sound updated.

So how can he do a modern version of these tracks? He should play the original album versions like it's still 1976 or what? You know exactly that he will never ever do that. He will never have an old school album or track or concert. If that's what you're looking for, then my only question is: what are you doing here still? Why are you lying to yourself that the Jarre from 30 or 40 years ago will perform today. Just let him go, if you don't enjoy it anymore, it's simple. There are so many other artists who are totally faithful to their 40 or 50 year old image. Jarre is not. If you're looking for that, Jarre was a terrible pick for a favourite artist. Apart from the 2007-2011 period, he never did it.

I think you don't understand. I'll try to explain a little bit:

Jarre has been playing the same versions of his tracks since 2016. I'm not saying that the AERO versions are good or bad, but they are from 20 years ago, made in a completely different environment, where the composition and production of the album were based on 5.1 sound system. The concerts "Jarre in China," "Monaco 2005," "Gdansk," "Linx," and "Water for Life" were held during that period. That era ended with the re-recording of Oxygène and the tour that started in Marigny. That cycle was closed. Then, the classic tracks were arranged for the 2009 tour and later for the 2010-2011 tour. That era also came to an end. Then the Electronica era began, with arrangements for the Electronica Tour in 2016. The tracks from this tour (The Architect, Web Spinner, Herbalizer, Zero Gravity, Exit, Glory, etc.) have been the same for 8 years, almost without changes. It's the same musical concept. There are no solos, no big differences and no music is played live.

At one point, you refer to the versions of Welcome to the Other Side, but I’m not sure which versions you're talking about. If it's the same as what he had been doing on the Electronica Tour (except for a remix of Oxygène 2 that he didn’t do and the terrible remix of Oxygène 4).

I don’t understand how you say Jarre returned to the AERO versions to make them sound "updated" when these are versions from 20 years ago, and arranged in a 5.1 context.

No one is saying it should sound like 1976. You ask, “Why are we lying to ourselves?” Now, I ask you: aren’t you lying to yourself?

Yeah, no one is saying that, except any other version is bad and terrible and unlistenable and techno (most people here use that word without knowing what actual techno is) and "just noise".
So your problem is that he doesn't make new versions of the songs, but your problem is also when he does make new versions! Again, you call the new WTTOS version of Oxygene 2 and 4 terrible. He did a totally new mashup for Epica and Oxygene 4, he did a totally new version for Azimuth with a didgeridoo, he added an epic electric guitar sound to Industrial Revolutions 2, he also did a new version for Herbalizer with a new bass, he did a new version of course for The Time Machine with an epic guitar solo, he has Adiescar play the violin before Oxygene 2. But that's apparently not enough. So every single one of those track has to be radically different, including Stardust or Exit? When did he do anything like that, seriously? Show me, link how many different versions of Calypso 3 did he do? Are they really so significantly different from each other over the years? Then show me examples for tracks like that one. Because I don't hear that sort of difference between several of those tracks from the 90s, between the originals and the 2000s live versions.

Solos? What kind of solos do you want? Brick England, Conquistador, he literally had solos where it was possible during the Electronica Tour. How many Jarre track are there that CAN have that sort of "Vintage from Teo & Tea"-type solo? Name the titles. Good luck writing a solo for Exit or The Architect for example. What were you expecting, Jean-Michel Jarre has never ever been some keyboard virtuoso, who plays live impovisations with super fast hands, you are asking that from the wrong artist.

Jarre himself said this. He said before the Starmus concert that the old track will be versions which are "updated, but not dance versions". So that means he played the tracks in versions which are not like the original album versions, but sound more modern, closer to what an audience will accept in 2024, but also without that being dance versions. He was naive enough to think that maybe, the people who kept whining for "too much EDM" will be okay with modern, but non-EDM versions. So I'm asking again, what versions do you expect? Okay, you say it should not be like in 1976, the AERO versions were 20 years ago, the Electronica verions are too EDM. So what's the solution? He should do modern versions which are different from AERO somehow, just for the sake of it being different? Because if you don't want nostlagia versions or EDM, the only thing left is 21st century, digital, non-dance versions. The Aero versions are exactly that. So he should make new versions which are basically like the Aero tracks, except totally different... logical. Again, I have a feeling that no matter what versions he will do, you guys will complain. I can already see, he coming up with a totally new Magnetic Fields and you guys will write "what's that horrible new M1, you can't even hear the melody"...

But the worst part of your comment: "no music is played live". Not this again, I'm so tired of this. Modern digital electronic production can't be recreated live, it's not possible. You are listening to electronic music. ELECTRONIC. In the 80s, he did recreate his electronic tracks with a rock band, so that was "live" in a way, but also less electronic. There are ZERO electronic artists today, who do that, nobody plays his music with a rock band, in fact, most of Jarre's music today are literally impossible to play like that on keyboards and guitars. And that's why I have a feeling that nostlagia is talking from you. Those times are simply over. Jarre can play some main melodies of his early albums and a few other exceptions, which are simple enough. Oxygene, Equinoxe, it's possible to play most of that. But imgaine trying that with The Architect. What can he play? Most of the melody is way too fast and also repetitive to play it like a piano tune. It's full of noises, beats, effects, in fact he did play many things like in La Rochelle, except not main melodies, he played effects, flourishes, etc. But again, I'm asking, who can The Architect become more "live", what are you expecting? How can he play that with a huge band, a Detroit techno song? Let's use a band for a Detroit techno track at a concert? He should spend his time and energy to teach dozens of musicians to recreate a techno track which is way too detail-oriented to play it like Equinoxe 4?

The guy is 76 years old, he is still doing concerts, he is still doing SOME new versions. What about also being excited, what about being happy that you can still have tracks and concerts? Now, criticising him is one thing, but some of you literally complain about every single track, every concert, every album that he has done in the last decade. No matter what he does. Where are the positive comments? If everything is negative about the last decade, why are you still following him?

This meme is about this attitude:

I would like to respond and continue the debate, but you have such an aggressive and fanatical way of approaching it that you are full of biases that prevent you from understanding what is written. I prefer not to continue with the topic.

Good luck, my friend.

I am biased for Jean-Michel Jarre on a Jean-Michel Jarre fanpage. I am also FANatic for Jean-Michel Jarre on a Jean-Michel Jarre FANpage. Scandalous! What was I thinking?

Good luck to you as well.

I've read this thread with interest and I'm not going to start taking sides or saying which version is right or wrong.

All I will say is that listening to the sounds of Oxygene Part 2 ring out across a warm Bratislava evening last year was special. The clarity of the sound was so pure and so direct, I simply didn't care which version it was. In that moment *that version* was perfect and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

As the music played, I looked over my right shoulder to watch a giant laser animation of JMJ projected across a mirrored glass skyscraper (a symbol of the post-1989 open markets Europe); straight ahead of me the UFO Bridge was gradually shifting colour (a symbol of 20th century communist Europe) and all the while, floodlit on the hilltop in the distance, was Bratislava's medieval castle (a symbol of Europe from pre-modern times).

That integration of sound, light, and urban environment that JMJ has talked about for so long was happening right there, right then, and I was witness to it [goosebumps typing this].

"Electronic music should be played outdoors" is another recurring JMJ theme, and that track, at that concert, in that city, in that moment ... everything worked perfectly ❤️
