Legendary couple: Charlotte Rampling and Jean-Michel Jarre, from love to friendship
This Thursday, February 5, Charlotte Rampling celebrates her 80th birthday. She shared the life of Jean-Michel Jarre for many years and fifteen years after their separation, their story is still as fascinating. Back on their relationship.
Charlotte Rampling was born on February 5, 1946, in Sturmer, England. At the age of eight, she moved to France, to Fontainebleau. She was educated at the Jeanne d'Arc Academy for Girls in Versailles, she learned French. From the 1960s, the actress multiplied roles in successful films such as "Les Damnés" (1969) or "Portier de nuit" (1974).
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT IN SAINT-TROPEZ
When Charlotte Rampling met Jean-Michel Jarre at a dinner in Saint-Tropez in 1975, it was love at first sight. Yet their love story seemed impossible. At the time, the actress, already famous, had been married for three years to Bryan Southcombe, actor and advertiser. Together, the couple has a little boy, Barnaby. For his part, the musician has been married since January to Flore Guillard, press secretary, with whom he has a daughter, Emilie.
Despite their respective marriages, Charlotte Rampling and Jean-Michel Jarre fall under each other's spell. "We were instantly attracted. A certain complicity existed between us and it grew over the following days, "said the composer in the columns of "The Independent" in 1993. In the same interview, the actress explained: "I was in a wedding that was not going too well, neither was Jean-Michel, and very soon during this weekend, we realized that there was something very strong that had happened between us."
Once separated from their partners, the two lovebirds move in together. They get custody of their respective children and raise them in Paris. "I became Barnaby's dad and Charlotte became Emilie's mom," the interpreter of "Fourth Appointment" told "Gala" in 2019. In 1977, Charlotte Rampling gave birth to a little boy named David. Artists like their parents, the three children followed in their footsteps. Barnaby became a film director, Emilie works as a graphic designer and David flourishes as a magician.
A CLOSE-KENED DUO DESPITE THE DIVORCE
In 1996, after more than twenty years of union, the couple separated, then divorced in 2003. Despite their breakup, the two artists remain close, as Jean-Michel Jarre explained to "Paris Match" in 2021: "Charlotte remains the pivot of my existence, the mother of my children, and my best friend. "
Emilie Jarre also remained very close to her stepmother, with whom she grew up. "When I was a child, I went through very hard times but she helped me a lot," she explained in the columns of "Gala" in 2019. And to add: "Charlotte is still my best friend today."
