1976: Jean-Michel Jarre's electronic music, a new "Oxygene"

Jean-Michel Jarre is to open the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on September 8. The atmosphere of the 3-hour show will be techno, with many DJ artists from the "French Touch". On July 14, 1979, Jean-Michel Jarre performed in concert at Place de la Concorde, in front of one million people. It was in 1976 that France discovered this young musician, with his album "Oxygene".

Jean-Michael Jarre: 'It's an honor' to celebrate electronic music at the closing of Paris 2024

The famous French composer and performer Jean-Michel Jarre defined this Thursday as 'a great honor' to perform next Sunday at the closing of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which will feature French electronic music.

"For me, it is a great honor and at the same time a great emotion, a great pleasure to participate in this final closing of the Olympic Games and, above all, also the opportunity to celebrate French electronic music," he said in statements to EFE.

'There is a real legitimacy in celebrating this music that, although not known enough, was born in France and Europe a century ago. It doesn't have its roots in jazz, blues or rock, but it was really in France where it emerged,' he recalled.

Jarre, pioneer of electronic music in the seventies and one of the most influential artists of the genre, highlighted 'the relevance of electronic music and its ability to unite two of the most universal elements of today, sport and music'.

"It is a way of merging two parts of our daily lives that today are the most universal elements of inclusion," he said.

The musician, son of composer Maurice Jarre, also wanted to break with 'certain stereotypes associated with the electronic genre'.

'Electronic music today is not just dance floor or disco music. Although it is also, it would be a mistake to reduce it to that. Today, it can be considered the classical music of the 21st century,' added the composer of 'Oxygene'.

Among the artists who will accompany Jean-Michel Jarre this Sunday at the closing ceremony are names such as Martin Solveig, Kittin, Agoria, Ofenbach, Irène Drésel or Nathalie Duchene, up to a total of 25 to offer a unique musical experience to the public gathered in the French State of Saint Denis.

Although Jarre announced that he will open and close the concert, he kept some details secret. "Obviously there will be many surprises this Sunday, I can't reveal them," he said with a knowing smile.

I really wonder what's this all about…

I think it's clarified after that sentence:
" 'Electronic music today is not just dance floor or disco music. Although it is also, it would be a mistake to reduce it to that. Today, it can be considered the classical music of the 21st century,' added the composer of 'Oxygene'."
