This is a photo I took an hour ago of a swan on the river right by my window.

Everything is right about this photograph.


Firstly the stillness of the water and the swan … just wonderful … could dream away.
If the stillness is not there the shot is ruined.

Secondly just the lone swan and the water …
Nothing else in the picture. Nothing to clutter the shot ... Nothing to distract the eye.

Absolutely the right perspective and distance: the size of the swan and the amount water.
Any more water, or a bigger swan and the shot loses its superb composition.

The Excellent angle for the swan : any other angle and the shot looses interest.

The neck held upright, the head bowed just right …
any other movement and the swan stops being so serene and peaceful.
A movement to the left and we would see a bit of an eye and the side of the face
… this would have ruined the shot.
A movement to the right and we would have lost the full view of the
underside of the beak with that detailed insignia.

The back absolutely still : no feathers out of place, no raising of the wings.
And a fantastically clean swan.
Nice exposure of the white feathers with the blue water.
The light reflecting and illuminating the underside of the back of the swan.

The direction the swan is swimming as if into the open seas with no end in sight is too fantastic.

And finally to add a wonderful balance to the shot
Two single leaves either side of the swan, going in the direction of the swan.
If the leaves are just on one side, it looses balance.
Any more leaves and the stillness is ruined.
If the leaves are moving in any other direction, the impact is lost.

This swan did swim near to me first,like it wanted me to take photographs of her
.......... or maybe warning me... dont come too near ...
cause the swancouple here where I live have 9 children.

They are still grey,
and they all look so beautiful when they swim together on the river near to my flat!
