Thanks Melo for the link. 8) That pic needs to be enlarged. :P

A rough English translation:

"Oxygene was one ovni musical in its time"

How it discovered electrónica music?

I made first classic education, later I passed for groups of rock. E, through a 2 secondary school colleague I entered in a on more experimental group to the French television and that he was directed for the Pierre Schaeffer, that was the inventor of concrete music. Who was it taught to me that music was not only done of notes and chords, but also of sounds. E that the difference between the noise and the musical sound is born of the intervention of the musician.

This age, however, an essentially experimental music. Its, later, followed another route...

Ten years before Oxygene it worked in these domínios. I made some failed records, music of films, produced artists... They had been practical works, but wise person who one another thing called me.

How it explains the change?

I made Oxygene before a species of general indifference. In house, in one it cooks transformed into studio caretaker, minimalista, with old equipment... E already said for me that, one day, had it to come back to record with equipment the serious one.

From there this new writing?

Necessarily. When the high definition appeared, and under the excuse of 30.º anniversary, I felt that it had fond the moment.

In middle of years 70, not experimental the electrónica music that if heard was, over all, the German. It felt that that one was not its way?

Pop is a allotment music. But, at the time, electrónica music over all laboratorial age. It heard what it happened, but it suggested - me paradoxes. The first one that I heard was Walter Carlos, who suggested to many people a ambiguidade on the sintetizadores. Or either, they saw them as instruments that they looked to imitate the sounds of others. E thus if passed to the side of the true potentialities of the instrument... To follow the Germans arrive, who made a species of vindication of the machine. They used the electrónica music of a expressionista form, mechanics. Over all the Kraftwerk (what it does not hinder that adores what they had made). But it was a cold, robotic music, desumanizada.

It looked for, before, a ideia of humanity in the electrónica?

For me those were the instruments more sensual than it knew. It could with them make sound as who makes culinária. E looked for to make a music that did not live of the repetition of events, that was not automatic. In Oxygene it does not have sounds that they are happened again, does not have sequenciadores.

How in one it has asked for sinfónica?

Later reflecti on this affinity with classic music. The composition of Oxygene is simple, but far of ingenuous. It was different of that if it made in the electrónica music of the time. Perhaps E this is one of the reasons objetives that justify its success. There it has any thing in which the people if they had found of a sensual and not only intellectual form.

Many had associated this music the environments of scientific fiction.

Of fact, but not I. Taste of scientific fiction. But my music I do not bind it space to the sidereal. Before to the vital space, to that in it involves them. It is a music more of the biosfera that of the stratosphere. From there the fact of, to the long one of the years, to have done as many on works the ambient questions, with a message ecologist without wanting to give lições as others have made. The artist must pass messages of the emotional and not dogmático point of view.

He waited the success that the album got then?

By no means! That music was refused by almost all the publishing companies. We were in time of punk and the record... They did not know that music was that one, without singer, without single. Ovni for the production of the time was one. My proper mother asked to me because I gave the name of a gas to a record... After the success, what he was negative capsized positive. The fact of being French functioned as exotismo.

As its relation with music to the living creature in events to the outdoors was born. Another "exotismo"?

This is a music that nor is of the estratosférico space nor of digs (as the rock). It is of the biosfera, the public space. Moreover, living creature blinded for the concept of one off, of the moment that is not happened again.

Because it still did not give concerts in Portugal?

Already it was for happening three times. One in the Place of fetichism of the Paço, another one in the Expo, this in Lisbon. E had plans for the Port. But none was still materialize. E I have to touch in Lisbon one day. The light of the city remembers it to me of Lyon, where I was born.

Thanks again, Melo. :D Good to see JMJ getting some kind of press coverage over in Portugal. 8)

Hmm, here’s the translation (some of it makes sense and some of it is  eg pears):

To revisit Oxygène
Pioneer of electrónica and responsible music for a hand-full one of records of the Guinness, Jean Michel Jarre vendeu until the o moment more than 80 million albums. This return appears in the height where they pass 30 years on the launching of the Oxygène classic, target of an integral rerecording, and duly folloied of the innovative DVD filmed in HD and 3D, Live In Your Living Room. Jean Michel Jarre invited the Destak for a luxury small-lunch, in the Palace Eyelash.
I remember to hear Oxygène and China Concert in small. Recently, when listening this improved digital version, 30 years after the original edition, I travelled in the time until the final o of setentas, beginning of oitentas. What it feels when hears Oxygène again?
In the reality, Oxygène was recorded in my kitchen, with very minimalista equipment. Two or three analogical sintetizadores and a recorder well velhinho of 8 tracks. It always said for proper me that one day would return to those musics with the adequate equipment. The original sound was not bad, but I wanted that I was better, cleaner and defined. This thought folloied me during many years, but it only has 4 or 5 years, with the arrival of the high definition (HD) for the cinema, audio television and, I took conscience by that had fond the hour to pass to the share.
I came back to the same instruments and recriei the record of identical form, but now in HD. When it it was to make, apercebi me of that some instruments, as the analogical sintetizadores of the time, are the foundations of electrónica music. Such as the Stradivarius has a similar paper in classic music or the Fender/Gibson in terms of rock'n'roll. Then I had the ideia to record the sintetizadores to the living creature. Already it had recorded diverse subjects, but never complete. E as I recorded originally in 8 tracks, needed 8 hands. I took 3 musicians with me for a studio great e we placed all the analogical instruments, recording longer versions of the one than the originals. This projecto received the heading from Live in Your Living Room. The ideia age...
... to provide intimismo to the people who listen in house.
Exactamente! To approach them of the instruments and the people who had developed them, without which it would not be here today. Such as as much other projectos of electrónica music also would not be.
These three musicians of whom he speaks. How he is that they had been chosen?
All they are made familiar to this type of instruments. None of them had participated in Oxygène, because it was a record where basically I made everything alone. One of the musicians, Dominique Perrier, is to the will with the instruments, such as Francis Rimbert, that I knew in the height of Equinox and that it knows everything on electrónica. Already Claude Samard seems to mix Moby with John Malkovich. Work with it has little time, but he is an excellent musician, being puts in charge of the general coordination.

He speaks to me of the DVD Live In Your Living Room. Of the HD and 3D.
The concept is exactly very simple. We placed all the instruments in the same room and filmed, high definition, all the concert, in one only take, as he was same to the living creature. The DVD shows to Oxygène and 20 minutes of new music, with variations concerning the same subject.
Or either, it is a raw register, without other images.
Exacto. It respects the original part integrally, without remisturas nor VJ. As it was a futurista and simultaneously classic concert. In the special version, the DVD includes two pairs of eyeglasses...
... to get the perspective 3D.
This exactly. E, when seeing, the sensation is to travel for the Living Room, following everything, tintim for tintim. In the reality, it is the first DVD of género.
It seems to be an innovation and pears.
Total. On the other hand, it has the retrofuturista objectivo of repescar what one became in years cinquenta and sixty, and, for another one, is clearly the next step, after the implementation of the high definition.
James Cameron (Titanic, Aliens) also already is to film in this way.
Yes, it is truth. Already it has a thousand cinemas in U.S.A. with this technology and the next production to the Spielberg will be also in 3D.
E also has a television developed for the Philips.
Certain. E inside of one or two years will have much more rooms with this technology in the Europe. In the analogical televisions, you only obtain to have blue red and, but in the cinema, it has projector special that used in simultaneous they offer to the sensation 3D, without losing the brightness, exactly with the eyeglasses. In the DVD, despite our special care, a significant percentage of the brightness is lost. E with this TV of the Philips...
... nor it has necessity to use the eyeglasses.
It is same this. Clearly that in a first phase it will be more for professional use, but that is a signal clearly of that in the future, will be the following step to the HD.
Michel Granger made diverse layers for its records. It counts to me professional relation to it and the new layer elaborated for Oxygène.
This layer resulted of a digital adaptation of the original, made has 30 years, for the proper Granger. Also we made an livened up version of the layer for the DVD, that allows the navigation in the interior of the skull. In the DVD also all are justified the instruments, have one making of, immense things...
It finds that the planet is to be without oxigénio?
More still nowadays of the one than in 1977. As much the Oxygène heading, as the proper grafismo, had been unhappyly sufficiently premonitory on what it was to pass. In terms of environment, supported development, the future of the planet. Nowadays, the people are more alert, had a wakening of consciences. Almost that he could be logótipo of the Al Gore (laughs).
Your generation failed the mission to construct a better world?
In the height underground was sufficient to think of this form. Few people had foreseen the perigos related with the future of the planet. Small messages as the layer of the Oxygène...
... they had been important for the diffusion of the message.
Exactamente. The message is transmitted soon that what you try to pass it reaches the noble schedule of the televisions. E currently the environment is in the order of the day.
It continues to develop works related with the Joined UNESCO and Nations?
Yes, I continue. Still in the last year I organized a concert in Morocco subordinated to the subject ' Water will be Life ' (Water is Life). It happened in full desert of the Sara. We intend to call the attention on one the ecological subjects that are in the order of the day: the drinking waters scarcity. Nalguns countries, a water bottle costs more money of that a bottle of oil.
It always liked to break barriers and to try things new. Which is the sensation to touch more than for 2,5 million people?
I perceived very early that the acoustic instruments or rock had been thought about function of actuações to the living creature. E alone later is that the microphones are placed and if thinks about recording them. The electrónicos instruments function in contrast. First they are born in studios or laboratories and later are that we try to place them in one palco. E, frankly, to see somebody behind a portable one, during 2 hours, is not the thing most exciting of the world. It was the necessity that took me to the meeting of the video, lasers or light, in the attempt to become the amused actuação most dynamic and. The following step consisted of inventing instruments that mixed light and music.
It had an multiaverage conscience before the word existing.
Yes, always I thought through an multiaverage mind.
I repaired recently that the subject Deadweight de Beck has one sample of Oxygène Part VI. How many times stumble at similar things?
Frequent. To the times directa is inspiration, noutras heights use the subject and make the recycling. I believe that I am one of the artists recycled of all the times (laughs).
How it is that the preparativeses for the 10 concerts in the Marigny Theater elapse, in Paris?
It goes to be a very special Christmas between 12 and 28 Ten Go to be concerts with the intimismo allowed for a room given to classic music. The ideia is that the people can be next to the instruments, giving to them which had it homage. It wanted to actuar without computers, timecodes, things of these. It is a risky bit, because it has instruments that already they are not ' young ', but its sound is so extraordinary that this will make the difference.
The Portuguese public will have hypothesis to see this concert specific?
The Europe liked to make a small digressão for all and to treat the Oxygène as if it was a film. In Portugal I have one projecto of a concert to the outdoors for the masses. But this projecto is completely different. Perhaps E for a first time was strange and the people did not face very well, for having other expectations.
E because to não.fazer the two in consecutive days, one in a small room, another one to the outdoors?
This is an excellent ideia. Exactly.

Here is a beautiful interview, which I translated and placed on http://www.jarreforum.com/showthread.php?t=1357 (there are other translations there as well):

Long (35 minutes) interview to Jarre, in Portuguese news radio TSF. Listen here. Broadcast on 14-Jan-2008, interviewer: Carlos Vaz Marques. Slight problem: answers are partially overdubbed in Portuguese.

What's your concept of success?

I think success is an accident. The trap for an artist is to consider that success is always due to him. It's not permanent though. You alternate between success and failure.

You were hesitant between becoming a painter or a musician. What made you choose music?

It was because I joined Pierre Schaeffer's group. We owe him everyhing: sequencers, loops, delays, inversions, everything that we hear today in music. I went for music because the work with frequences and sound textures is exactly the same as non-figurative (abstract) painting. It's playing with colours, sound colours, to create sound landscapes just like creating landscapes in a canvas.

Are the light spectacles you put on the result of your trying to combine music and painting?

Absolutely right.

But what's the actual relationship between music and painting?

There's a great similitude between abstract painting, which was the one I was most interested in, and electronic music. They can both be compared to cooking. We can mix ingredients, sauces, flavours, just like we mix colours, textures, like Pollock or Hartung did and influenced me, just like we mix sounds, colours, textures, depths. It's exactly the same thing.

Did music come to you first or was the electronics that pushed you towards music?

Technology has always defined the style. The invention of the brush led to painting, the piano led to the preludes, the electric guitar led to rock'n roll, the 3-minute single led to quick songs. When I was a child, I saw my grandfather invent incredible things - he made the first mixing console in France - called TBase, the first portable turntable, and a coffee grinder that made an unbearable noise. I was already attracted to sound - I played the oboe, and my father was a great film music composer. I was 5 when my parents divorced - I have few memories of his influence.

So you lived since very young surrounded by technological innovation.

Yes, and I was very happy about it. I'm not a technician, but that world aroused my curiosity.

Are you still up-to-date with today's innovations?

Yes, I'm amazed with Apple's iPhone. I'm interested in technological innovations both personally and as an artist.

You feel the need to own the latest gadget?

No, I'm not interested in acquiring the latest instruments, but to know them. The artist is made to "pirate" things, in the good sense of the word. He pirates technology, provokes accidents, makes space for creativity.

Do you keep the same attitude towards new instruments?

That question is very easy and very hard to answer. There are two very distinct categories of instruments: analog, which are at the foundation of electronic music, which I use with the utmost joy as they are sensual, organic.

Sensual?

For many reasons. The hands touch them, caress them. We tune them until we get what we want. Then, the sound is very warm, round, so it isn't aggressive on the ear. In a computer there isn't this sensual aspect, it's much more intelectual, you make calculations, move the mouse, give instructions, it's not the same.

So computers did not bring you joy?

I think there was a dark period in the 80s when the digital was notoriously worse than the music. It was a very sad phase, where instruments were not at the same level. Digital led to the split of music into segments. It took 20 years to start finding again the lost warmth.

Are you still an enemy of the CD?

Of the CDs produced then, yes. I think the CD is responsible for the crisis of the record and of the music. The music industry wanted to sell CDs like yoghurts. That's why I composed 'Musique pour Supermarchés', published in one copy to protest against this state of affairs. Music is vibration, you have to feel it. With analog, it was simple: you recorded in a magnetic device and vibration was continuous; then a needle in a record reproduced the continuous vibration. It was a physical process and those vibrations went directly from my musical gesture to your ear. Digital split this in segments: vibration was segmented - it arrives to your ear in fragments and the sense of continuity in vibration is lost. So what you get is an emotion cut in slices.

But can't you hear the same thing?

Of course you hear the same thing, at the hearing level. But at the emotional level it's not the same thing. So that changed everything and changed the relationship between society and music. It got worse with MP3 and now with music in cell phones with minuscule speakers. But the digital also progressed. With HD, we get a sound as good as analog sound, if not better. That's what I did on DVD with Oxygene. I think the medium should be reevaluated.

What challenges are still facing you?

Do you realize what question you've made? You ask an artist "you have already been so successful, what can you still do?" Now, you don't make music to be successful. We are not bankers, that's the main problem - mixing music and creation with the financial result. Of course we work to get a salary, though music is now perceived to be free, as free as the air we breathe. It's a scandal. There were things that resulted well and guaranteed my material comfort but that does not block my desire to compose.

What do you still desire?

An artist has something to say and spends his life saying the same thing. Look at the works of the Beatles, Kubrick, Fellini, Garcia Marquez, Coppola - they always say the same thing but in a different way. It's the media that in each record asks "what is there new?" and the poor artist has to answer "well, it's totally different from the earlier works". Is 'Yesterday' so different from 'Strawberry Fields'? No, it's the Beatles. Their sound is unmistakable and that's why, 20 years later, one can say they always composed the same song. In my case, I'd like to one day listen to something of mine and say "here is something that corresponds from A to Z to what I intended to say". But I'm not there yet.

'Oxygene' was not a predictable success...

It was turned down by every publisher, except a small one that took it. I've never told this, but it was my wife, Charlotte Rampling, we had just met, she was filming in Ireland, and I showed up with the recording of Oxygene. She listened to it at night and was fulminated. She said "look, this is so special that it will either be a total failure or a global success". I explain the success in that there was electronic music in Germany - there were Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, but it was totally different music, they had a robotic, dehumanized, cold approach to music. They led people to think that electronic music was cold, robot music. Oxygene was the opposite, impressionist, melodic, with no repetition of sounds, with all sequences played by hand. It was human, analog music, not machine music.

Was there a community of electronic music in the 70s?

No, the word 'community' appears with the Internet. There was no community back then. And electronic musicians were not like their rock counterparts, they worked in their small instrument labs.

Did you know the members from Krafterk?

I knew, but we didn't live in the same country, we traveled less, we didn't really have contact. After we became successful, we came across each other several times but before that each one was in their corner, totally underground.

Your obsession was to build a bridge between Pop and Classical music. Did you do it?

With Oxygene and Equinoxe, yes.

Do you read Sci-fi?

I used to read more, until 2001. Now less. My reference work is "2001". Nothing compares to it.

Your music is considered futurist. Do you like it?

That's true, and even though I read sci-fi, I never considered my music as connected to sci-fi. My music is not connected to the stratosphere, but to the biosphere. Oxygen is not in the stratosphere.

But why that association?

For a very simple reason, because I used electronic instruments. It had a futurist aspect, a "Star Wars" side.

"Star Wars" used orchestral music...

That is very interesting. I would have liked to compose music for this genre of film but nobody has done it. There was Ridley Scott, who did Blade Runner with Vangelis, but that's the sole example. I think directors suspected the synth was used to fake orchestral sounds, so it was better to use real orchestras. It was the idea that the synth and electronic music are uncapable of conveying feelings. It's incredible.

Is there still a concert that you would like to perform, that would be a challenge?

You need to understand, because you media think that I attack concerts like someone climbs the Everest, that most of my concerts were by demand, not because I wanted to perform them, like a capricious child - "now I want to play at the Pyramids..."
