Interview with Randy Althetime
Regarded as the father of electronic music, keyboard guru Jean Michel Jarre comes to town very soon with his electronic prowness, dazzling audiences with his spectacular laser light shows that have in the past set London Docklands, Houston and Paris skylines alight with images, fireworks and lasers. This week, Jean Michel was in town, so we grabbed the chance to speak to him with hopes of highlights of what we are about to see for this years european tour.
RA: Jean Michel, thank you for taking the time out to speak with us.
JMJ: It's a pleasure
RA: We are pleased to see you here once again in the United Kingdom. Last years OXYGENE tour was indeed out-of-this-world. Your up and coming tour which see's you here once again in the UK, will the new show be on similar lines?
JMJ: Yes, indeed. I will be on stage again with the old ladies, playing with my vintage organ for all to see. The feel and pleasure I get is immense. And I'm sure that those who attend my shows get as much pleasure watching me perform as I do performing.
RA: Jean Michel, could you tell us a little more about the "old ladies" as you term them.
JMJ: The old ladies have been with me for some time now. They are almost part of my life. I see them on a regular basis. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. But the occasional "smack" will see them put right. I do have to remind them here and there to add or remove the odd chord, but they have never let me down to the point where they need to be replaced.
RA: What is your favourite onstage instrument?
JMJ: That has to be my vintage organ. I like the feel and texture of it. For the better part of my adult life I have spent playing with my organ. It was in my early 20s when I decided that maybe I should play with my organ on stage in front of large audiences.
RA: What is the largest crowd you have ever perform in front of?
JMJ: Moscow. An incredable night. Although the tempretures were low, I did experience a few performing problems. My organ does not like low tempreatures. On a few occasions during rehersals, we thought that the organ would not make an appearance during the night of the show. Thankfully it did.
RA: Have you ever had any major set backs during one of your concerts?
JMJ: Yes, just last year infact. One particular organ I was performing with started to play up. Now matter how hard I bashed it, it would not work to how I wanted it.
RA: Could you tell us what we are to expect in this years tour?
JMJ: This year promises to be a big one. I will be performing things on stage that has never been done before. Hopefully with each place I visit, authorities will not prevent me from doing what I want to do. I enjoy playing with my vintage organ, onstage with lasers, lights, fireworks and projections while people look on. I get that buzz.
