Paris Electronic Week, Jean-Michel Jarre pays tribute to Pierre Henry

Pierre Henry, a timeless composer with immense influence

The question of "Pierre Henry, first DJ" was discussed this Friday night at the Gaîté Lyrique during the tribute paid to the composer by Jean-Michel Jarre, who explained the difference between the approach of composers of electronic music and that of Pierre Henry. He started from rough sounds and attached himself to the acoustic quality of these sounds that he recorded and later treated to give them the musical qualities he wished they had. Conversely, DJs and composers of electronic music leave simple frequencies, sounds rather poor and enrich them by treatments and effects, the starting material is not at all the same. Pierre Henry is certainly a pioneer, but his works can hardly be dated, he belongs to the past, the present and the future. In the production of electronic music, the effects used date the sound. Pierre Henry has used very little, it is by publishing that it infused the rhythm with the "concrete" raw sounds that formed the basis of his plays. He used the technology of his time to shape the "concrete" sound (which exists), not the one invented by man and emitted by musical instruments. "Composing is the art of decision" reminds us Jean-Michel Jarre at this conference tribute. Henry had a happy hand because even if "traditional" musical instruments are not used, composers of concrete and electroacoustic music are very attached to the musical gesture.
