Does JMJ look back on Oxygene 7-13 with some regret?

Do people think JMJ is not so proud of Oxygene 7-13? In all the press and publicity he did for Oxygene 3 in late 2016 he almost never mentioned the 1997 release. He just referenced the 40 year anniversary of the original. Maybe this was just to keep his interviews shorter and more focused, but I thought it unusual he made so little mention of Oxygene 3 being the third part of a trilogy and that each of the three albums combine to make a whole. The little echo refrain of Oxygene Pt. 6 in the opening to Pt. 20 is a nice touch but I feel he could have added a similar refrain to the similar Pt. 13 too which would make the whole trilogy complete just as the last piece begins.

I doubt it. He played Oxygene 12 and 13 at the 2007/2008 Oxygene 30th anniversary tour, and both those tracks were regular tracks at many concerts, Oxygene 8 as recent as the Electronica tour. You know how it is with press-PR.
But I do agree, a few nods to Oxygene 7-13 would have made it more coherent, Oxygene 3 (the track) and 6 are referenced on the Oxygene 3 album.

I don't think so, he still played Oxygene 8 in the most recent concerts. 12/13 were also often played during the concerts before the Electronica thing, so I highly doubt he regrets the albums. Though like Jones said, I do think more connections in 14-20 would've made it more consistent between the three albums.

If anything, I think Jarre might not like the way the album now sticks out as the different one in regard to approach and especially the artwork. The first and third were made with restrictions, be it because that was just how it was or self imposed. And 7-13 was a real project that was even delayed because there was more time required to create it. Combine that with how they reworked the cover art for the Oxygene 2 re-release of it...

Though I still think the reworking of the cover art and Oxygene 3 were strange and lazy, but oh well...

Yeah, both good points Shadow and Dr Jones. Hadn't thought of that way, that music from 7-13 has appeared in the live sets recently. Good points. I just feel there were some missed opportunities to wrap the whole trilogy together when Oxygene 14-20 came out. Anyways, I've been doing a lot of running recently, and on my longer runs, I like listening to the "full Oxygene" 1 through to 20, and it always strikes me how different 7-13 sounds compared to those that preceded it and then came later. It's def the odd one out.

Also, where abouts in Oxygene 3 is part 3 (the track) referenced? I hadn't spotted that.

I agree with you on Oxygene 7-13 being the odd one out. The album is much more melodic than Oxygene 1-6 and Oxygene 14-20 are. I think it fits Equinoxe more than Oxygene in that regard.

Oxygene 3 (the song) is referred to at the end of Oxygene 16, where it's played in a major key, instead of a minor key.

Oh wow, for some reason I never made the connection between that and Oxygene 3, despite it being so bloody obvious.

Not exactly. The key is minor in both cases (C minor for O3, F minor for O16). The melody is the same, the difference is that it is positioned differently with regards to the root note. In Oxygene 3 it begins on the root and ends on a 5th; in Oxygene 16 it begins on 4th and ends on the root.

Btw. Oxygene 16 is a very underrated piece. For some reason many reviews of the album hardly mention it at all. I find it much more interesting than Oxygene 15 (which gets attention probably because of phased strings and Minipops sounds)

I remember listening to 16 and realizing the album "clicked for me" with that track. So, great track.

If I remember correctly Oxy 7-13 was a great commersial for Clavia DMI and their Nord Lead synth line. Roland JP-8k was also used a lot so maybe the old "digital vs analog" had some impact on the difference soundwise. I don't think JMJ would've wanted Oxy 7-13 undone. A bit like a "poppier" disco version of 1-6.

Recording Oxy 7-13 on Roland Vs840 portable mixer recorder has something to do with how it sounds.

::::

JmJ really likes performing Oxy8 closeup camera electronica tour inviting audience into his kitchen.

Oxy 12 JmJ enjoys going hard on this in previous concerts.

Oxy13 JmJs emotive peace Gdansk Solidarnosc, choirs emotions showing on their faces Moscow.

::::

As an album theres nothing brilliant about Oxy7-13 in terms of ideas compositions.
Several electronic albums from other artists from the era are brilliant.

Synthesis, layering sounds on Oxy7-13 is Brilliant Far Ahead of many electronic albums of the era.
Seemingly effortless for JmJ.

::::

Oxy7 cringy lead sound to open the album
Even now cringy. I can't listen to it.
From 8min till end should opened the album.
Compositionally it's just lazy although not as lazy as MagField1 part 1 sequence and pads.

Oxy8 yep like it.

Oxy9 closest to spirit of Oxy1 my favourite on the album.

Oxy10 pass it's just terrible.

Oxy11 ireally interesting lead melody one of my faves from JmJ, accompaniment mashup of rave hardcore Goa trance.

Oxy12 most brilliant on the album.
Should  have changed shrill sound of repetitive opening sequence it's too harsh, as well as made the sequence far more varied.

Oxy13 ear piercing shrill cabasa shaker percussion should been left out. Just keep the bass drum heart beat and tom rolls.

::::

Re Oxy16 probably the most brilliant track on the album marred by drums percussion.
What is it with JmJ adding unnecessary drums percussion
he did it on Oxy2 Equi 4 5 7.

Albums JmJ got drums percussion just about right
CinC, Zoolook, Revolutions, WFC, Metamorphoses, GOL, Sessions 2K, Alive in Bourges, Tea Tree (teo tea), Electronica 1&2.

::::

Oxy7-13 album art Superb Michel Granger.
Oxy14-20 really poor judgment on album art. Michel Granger recent art far better.

Oxygene 7-13 is an album you do when
other avenues in electronic music you have already done
and has been done by other electronic musicians.

And you don't want to copy anyone else's style as you have your own style.
And you don't want to copy latest trends as you once were at the forefront
and you don't want to be a copycat me too.

So you copy yourself.

Here is what Jarre told me about Oxygene 7-13 when I interviewed him in 2018:

"– I prefer Oxygene 3 (2016). Oxygene 7-13 wasn’t analogue enough. And that was because we were in this very silly era. It was an era where we started to discover that digital just couldn’t match the warmth of analogue sounds. And I tried to do this sequel with a digital approach, like if I had digital synths back when I did the original."
