Can anyone help me recognize these drums in Jarre's 2005 concert?

I've been working on a cover project, a remake of Industrial revolution, the Gdansk Shipyard concert version in Poland, 2005. I love that one, mostly because of how they spiced it up with the drum tracks.

The song itself, using the TV broadcast as the raw drums are more audible.

So my goal being to make the most accurate cover as possible, I'd like to ask for some help from you to find the drums loops or sound libraries they've used in this song.

With a few extra piece of info I could find:
  • - I wrote a stupidly long analysis where I've analyzed all the percussion tracks, and separated them into their most probably sample format. Also, showing my progress, show some isolated drum tracks. So I definitely encourage you to check this out for some more info! https://gearspace.com/board/electronic- ... rnosc.html
    - The sound samples are from the early 2000s most likely, at least from before 2005
    - The genre we're looking at is some type of industrial, DnB, Break percussion style samples.
Where he used similar samples
  • - Jarre used the same loop (more info on that other post) in Intro Saturée, from his 2006 Water for Life concert
    - Similar genre of break drum samples are used in Chronologie 2, at the Gdansk 2005 concert, maybe he got them from the same bag of samples
    - At the same Gdansk concert, in the Acropolis song, I managed to find the exact same drum loop in Best Service's XXL 1500 Drum Pack. Maybe that's a good place to look?
Intro saturée's drum track, matching exactly the one in Shipyard Opening's second part + end:

Live, loops or samples?
Clearly, it is absolutely possible that some of the tracks were custom made. Nonetheless, the electronic part of the Solidarnosc concert is full playback (except for some Fx and small melodies), so there were no live plays for drums. That's why I'm raising (and hope for) the possibility of loops. JMJ is a sample and synth dude, I doubt they recorded anything "just" for this occasion. So yes, sound libraries, or pre-made loops.

That's all I'm afraid. We also looked at "Methods of Mayhem" Loops for ACID - Industrial Toolkit, it definitely has a similar style, maybe it's a good place to look, but we didn't find anything in there.

Any guesses? Anyone who could help me? It would be super appreciated! I've been looking for this for quite a while! :?
And more towards music people working in the 2000s, any name suggestion for such drum loops sample packs, to dig into?

I contacted both Francis and Claude, feeling more like Claude worked on the coordination and saw him behind the mixing boards during production in some behind the scenes. No replies, so I didn't try to bother them much, turned towards forums. Hoping I could find some extra help! Or anyone else I could reach out to?

Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum 8) Wish I could help you out on this one, there's a very slight off-chance that those percussion loops could be in the same packs as used in Metamorphoses (as mentioned in this thread by Wax Mango: viewtopic.php?p=206904#p206904)

Hopefully someone else knows the answers!

Thanks a lot for both! :)
The Distorted Reality 1&2 does sound interesting from the few samples I've listened to! Also since it was confirmed to be used by JMJ, that's definitely a plus! I need to check the Cuckooland sounds as well, see if anything matches!

I'll update on what I found

Hoping to see more replies as well!

While I can't help you with finding the samples, what you have so far sounds great anyway.

Have you been able to source the sound effects from the long intro?

Hey Jote, thanks for the kind words! :)

Yep, everything is mostly sounding great! The Machine Run sample was simply taken from the original song, but I'm planning on generating it myself since I figured out how to use the D-50

I built the pads from scratch with a Logic Pro synth, they sound pretty accurate so I'll keep them (also I wasn't able to find the original patch on the D-50, they might sound better). The bass was slapped onto the song for the Gdansk version, so I doubt it's from any of the old tech synth, I just recreated it in Logic without bothering too much

I used Logic's factory libraries for the Strings, but they sound a bit cheesy, I'm pretty sure it's just me not yet fully understanding how to mix orchestral sounds properly. I might get Kontak plugins some time, I can see if I can get better results by using them!

Oh yeah there's just this mouth/pad sound at the beginning of the song that I couldn't find nor recreate accurately, but I'm sure it's some modern synth sound. Might need to spend some extra time on that!

Then that's mostly it, the both solos are played with the Grittar 2 plugin, or at least that's the closest patch to it. With some extra pitch automation, modulation, delay and reverb, they sound very authentic!

It's really just those drums that still lack accuracy, but ey, we'll do with what we can haha! I'm still determined to finding them tho :)

PS, I looked into the Distorted Reality 1&2 libraries, I couldn't find any of the samples there. I even tried slowing down a few, chopping up the rhythm specifically for that rim sound, but nah. But those in the pack definitely have the same sound design vibes

Hi Ddemkoo,

I can confirm that the drums you're looking for are not from any of the Distorted Reality or Cuckooland libraries. The main drums you reference (kick/snare loop) are far too generic to be from those libraries!

However, there are a few sounds that are from DR - the warped string/guitar-like sound at 2'25 is from Distorted Reality 1, then at 3'36 there's another noise loop that starts - that too is DR1. It's also heard in a track called Elements by Paul Alty. Oh, and the screechy noise hit at the end, that's DR1 also.

Hey Wax Mango!

YESS!! I can confirm, that warped string sound is on there! I put it in a sampler, added some effects and it sounds perfect! :)

Although I've been looking for the other 2, I couldn't find either of them. Looked in DR2 as well. The boom I suppose is most likely a mix of multiple sounds, or maybe one that got slowed down, I will have to see. And for the raising/falling noise, I couldn't find any that would match the one in "Elements" in DR1. Also after listening closely, I'm not completely convinced it's the sound JMJ used. Any thoughts on that?

Anyways, thanks a huge ton for the first sound, definitely some progress there! :D

Apologies - the noise loop I said was DR1, it's DR2!

It is! :)

So for the DR1 pack, for the drone sound at the start it's called Nervana (or Nirvana), I put it in a sampler, added a long attack and release, and some reverb!
The noise sound, I couldn't find it. I'm unfortunately not able to look into it soon, but I found 2 things in DR2:
- The sound that was mentioned by Wax Mango in "Elements", but I'm sure it's not the sample used in Solidarnosc
- A sound that was called "Air pressure" or "Air hiss", that sounds kind of similar. I duplicated and played it forward, then backwards, and added some automation. I'm not sure if it's how it was done, but it could be it!

Check it out!

Sorry I forgot to remove the metronome while exporting, and I don't have the clean version, but you get the idea!

For the rest, the drums are custom created, trial and error, random sounds that sounded as similar as possible :/
But, I'm very much open to any new suggestions, in case we find anything new!

OK ! That is great ! I think we need to create a topic with all the dr1 and dr2 samples we have ! Kind of a data base... I wil start this week-end I think 😉

What are the odds?? :O

I was looking at the most random video on Youtube, I found exactly that air hiss sound that we were talking about! (The one we couldn't find in DR). Wow!

(Timestamped)

I'm not sure this helps a ton, but at least this confirms that indeed it was a loop, and not created on the spot for Jarre's song!
So this one is definitely a more known loop. Also it might be more than just a white noise, there might be a few extra drums in that loop, because I'm getting those exact same kick drums rhythm and sound.

What are your thoughts? Worth trying to go through the chain of contacts and somehow get in touch with the people who worked on the song?

Edit:
Here's the one at 140bpm which I assume is the original tempo

I think we have to look into RMX library. This vst has been released in 2004 and contains many loops. Moreover it is Éric Persing behind this vst so....

It's Distorted Reality 2. Most of the loops on DR 2 are also available as separate hits/parts which can be individually sequenced, but that noise loop is DR 2.

You mean the Stylus RMX?

I've been contacting tons of drum library creators for the past few days, so far nothing really. BUT some new info:

I've contacted Zero-G, they said that it's probably not from their library.
I've contacted Spectrasonics, they said it might come from their sounds, but if it did then it's from a plugin, they redirected me to Stylus RMX Xpanded. Checked the price, eh might not justify buying it. Although it looks like a REALLY nice drum editor, plus i love these type of drum sounds, so if anything then maybe there’s that. Anyone can confirm or reject?

Yep I went through all the sounds and I couldn’t find it. The one you’re referring to that’s in Elements by Paul Alty is called “Undulater 1”, it sounds close but it’s definitely not what they’ve used or altered. (I tried effects but it’s just not it, besides the fact that they sound exactly the same in JMJ’s and Ink Master just immediately tells that it’s one same loop, with little to no modifications)

The other possible candidates that despite sounding very similar are not the sample (with some editing), still from DR2:
Undulater 2, Rev Weirdo, Sweepstepz, Air release, Brush Rug, Gliders, Whizzes, Nightgasp
Is it one of these you had in mind?

Also, what about Dangerous CD Company’s The Danger 1/2? Someone suggested that on another forum, said these were also legacy libraries with processed sounds?
