Research by a team of engineers at Pioneer HQ has led to a Blu-ray disc with 20 layers of information.
Each layer of the disc can store 25GB of information to provide a whooping 500GB of storage.

well, I remember reading similar news regarding something like 400GB on one BDR just some weeks ago. The BDR seem to have an improved surface (more scratch resistant than DVDR / CDR), but that's yet to be seen. I mean: as soon as I can afford a BDR-drive and especially the BDR (still too expensive), I will test if thats true with the scratch resistant surface.

But still: good news. Even if they "only" manage to commercialize a 4 or 8 layer disc / burner, this would be cool
