I'm not very deep into fantasy, but I can recommend you Andrew (Andrzej) Sapkowski's books - especially the "Wiedzmin" serie ("The Witcher"). He is the Polish author, but I think his books have been already translated into English. He has great style of writing and big sense of humour. What I also love in his books are many clever allusions to the history and current situation.
Even people who rather don't like this kind of literature find his books interesting.
And just as a curiosity - in the mentioned serie there'a a character called "Jarre" (it's used as a name), in fact not my favourie one, as rather boring comparing to other - that's a boy who felt in love with one of the main characters and...OK, I won't tell anything more as somebody may want to read the book in the future

Going back to the name - on the website dedicated to Sapkowski there's the index of names of people nad places in the "Wiedzmin", where you can read what/who were they inspired by. Next to the "Jarre" it's written "popular French composer". I don't know if the index was consutlted with Mr Sapkowski, but I heard that he likes electronic music.
