It's in French and I had to use an anti-paywall site to read it, but here is the most interesting part of what he said about AI:

"The principle of AI is to harvest big data to bring us a result, it is a process familiar to creators. Where does a musical idea come from if not from our subconscious, which will explore our analog big data, by that I mean our memory, our culture, our environment to give birth to this idea that the creator will want to exploit. 'Artists are all thieves', said Picasso. I unconsciously plunder everything I listen to, what I watch, what I read. AI is an extension of my hand and my imagination and today it is a tool that I control."

What do you think about his statements?

I understand his point of view, as an artist he always said how he is a sponge, but AI is not that. So no, I don't agree with him on this.

Picasso can "steal" Vermeer's Girl With A Pearl Earring, but in the end it is still Picasso who is making it. An AI will copy his style, but it will be a copy. Plagiariam, as Mr. Mooncat said in the other topic:

AI can help creative people giving ideas to work on and that is probably what JMJ means with an extension of his hand.

But, in the end, generative AI right now is implemented in the worst kind of way with big companies stealing people's work and plagiarize everything. Plus, the environmental consequences are disastrous.

But, in the end, generative AI right now is implemented in the worst kind of way with big companies stealing people's work and plagiarize everything. Plus, the environmental consequences are disastrous.

That's 100% true, but in those interviews, JMJ argues that though he hates that aspect as well, it's not AI's fault, it's not technology's fault, that it's a human error and social error. He says the thing we should do is to fix these issues in society and not banning AI. He argues that regulation and laws are always what making the difference between chaos and freedom, but that doesn't mean you should reject freedoms.

Michel Geiss commented this in a Jarre fan group today:
"Last night, on the eve of the Paris AI conference, President Macron cited Jean-Michel Jarre as a major AI-using artist, with his portrait projected onto the giant screen at the Grand Palais. In the debate, the french President was mainly trying to emphasize the benefits of AI."

It seems like being this pro-AI artist is becoming part of Jarre's legacy. History and the future will tell how people will see it decades from now.

People who defend AI often play the Picasso card in the hope that some sort of philosophical debate will distract from all the negative aspects of gen AI.
Its actually really simple.

Creative work is influenced by things the artist has seen, heard or felt for themselves.
AI output is made up of millions of pieces of art, music, writing that the artist/prompter isn't even aware of.
Its pathetic, lazy and unethical and we should be pointing our fingers and laughing that someone would be willing to attach their name to it.
Its the comic sans of creativity.

I'm not scared of AI, I'm laughing at it.
