What do you think about monarchy?

I know some of you on this forum lives in a country with a King and a Queen. Some of you might think it is strange and some of you don't. The ones that don't live in monarchys lives in republics and can also have a word in this debate.

Today the Swedish King is celabrating his 60th Birthday and has had a big gala on TV...very stiff. I am not pro monarchy here in Sweden. I am not particiulary in love with this family of Bernadotte. They are boring. Strangely I like the families of Norway and Denmark better, mainly because they have small children in the families and that is much more cute and fun to watch. I would like Sweden to become a presidency, but I don't know if it would do any good either. I also support Camilla Parker Bowles in the English family. But that is another topic to start I might guess.

So whats your opinion?

I live in a country without monarchy and I wouldn't say I'm unhappy about it (though there're so many absurdal things going in Poland, but it's not on-topic) :)

I always looked at monarchy as at something...useless and old-fashioned (don't want anybody to feel offended, it's just my personal opinion), but some time ago I talked with one guy from Britain and he told me that he treats the queen as some kind of...tourist attraction and I must admit I get his point.
But I can't imagine how would I feel about it if I lived in a country with royal family, so I don't wknowif my post is really worth in this discussion :wink:

Practically useless, not really harmful, though.

I have nothing against it. I don't see why some want to remove monarchy, I hope that some can tell me the disadvantages about monarchy.
In my opinion, the monarchy is good for tourism.
I don't see any advantages if the monarchy was replaced by a president.
I am wating for the comments like "humans are equal and monarchy is a symbol of people being more important than others". :D

And being serious...I don't think being a queen/king/any member of royal family is much fun...I just can't imagine that you can be happy, "working" as "visiting-card" of the country, with conciousness that your every single step is watched and commented...and that all just because being daughter/son of "somebody important" not because you really want it... :roll:

Uh, well actually, that's exactly what I believe. In people being equal, and that the monarchy (at least the British one) is defunct, out of date, practically a laughing stock compared to what most people think in the UK. It really is terrible, as none of these people have any more right to the throne than a homeless hobo. Just because they were born into a prestigious family. I mean, the Prince of Wales is the most nationalist fascist you could meet. He refers to the handing over of Hong Kong to the People's Republic in 1996 (?) as 'The Great Chinese Takeaway'. They are also from a generation where racism was acceptable, and I wouldn't mind betting some of them are supporters of the BNP.

It's just totally useless. Recently we had one of them monarchism days, and all people went promonarchy and nationalistic and all that whereas they wouldn't care for the rest of the year.

I never feel that the royal family is and old phenomena. I have never feelt that monarchy was useless or that the royal family are better humans than I, they are a symbol just like the Eiffel tower. In Denmark, we don't have alot of attractions or symbols for the country. I grew up with the monarchy, and I don't want the greatest person in the country to be some stupid president.

Just my answer. Am I the only person in here who is not against monarchy? 8)

Nope! :wink: I don't want no fu(beep) president. :x I like history and traditions, and Denmark has the oldest monarchy in the world, which I'm proud of. :P

Well, I'm not against monarchy, but it just doesn't make sense, I think. Yeah, let them be queen and kings and whatever, fine with me... :P :lol:

I think that as long as people living in countries without royal families are against them and people living in the countries where there is a royal family are for, everything is fine :wink:
Problem would begin if it was other.

And do the royal families have any real influence on what is going on in the country? For me they're just puppets :)

Don't misunderstand me - I'm not against monarchy as I have no reason to be against- nobody force me to live in it. But I wouldn't like to pay taxes for someone who is called "queen" just because having such and such surname.

And I imagine life of the member of royal family must be horribly boring :?

Well, our Royal family is lovable and very much down to earth. What they cost in taxes, they make up for in publicity.

I wouldn't mind the Royal family getting back to absolutism, as I'm 100% against politicians. :P :twisted:
