Are we sure this is not the original Oxygène from 1976 remastered and taken on the CD and on the DVD2D in DTS with the skull ?

again to make things clearer.... the DVD performance of "Oxygène", including instruments presentation will last about 90 minutes, so don't expect them to play anything else than "just" Oxygene plus the 3 variations, plus the intro plus the instruments presentation....

My initial thoughts on the new Oxygene...

Well Amazon delivered this masterpiece on my birthday... all was well! This really is a must own item. Jarre's motivations for making this recording may be a bit suspect (his last album wasn't so good, I believe he had lost his way a bit, and it's fair to say he lost a fair few of his original dedicated followers as he's been sidetracked by whatever techno electronic music was in vogue over the past few years), but it seems that here he has rediscovered what makes him tick.

The set comprises an audio cd and a DVD. The audio CD is a pure re-recording of the original Oxygene album. Again, the motivations behind this may be a bit suspect, but there is no doubting the quality of this piece. The re-recording is faithful to the original. The arrangements are the same, there's no modernisation or updating. Unlike, say, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2003, this re-recording is literally note for note - unless you are an audiophile you will be hard pressed to spot the differences. If you already own Oxygene there is little here to motivate you to buy another copy. I persoanlly think that this IS a re-recording rather then a remaster, but judge for yourself...

The DVD is amazing! Jarre, together with three other musicians has recorded the entire album in a live performance 'in your living room', with additional 'variations' throughout. It feels like it too. It's got a 'Later with Jools Holland' feel to it, it's intimate and very personal. There's hardly any digital gear (aside for the digisequencer?), it's all old analogue stuff which is a joy to see. I've never been particularly excited by instruments before, but like looking at a particularly well crafted guitar, you can see the beauty in these old instruments. You can plainly see that the recording is live (though there may have been more then one take here or there as there are a few continuity flaws - at one point you see Rimbert unplugging something but the next he is playing a keyboard with no sign of the leads he had in his hand!) and you can plainly see the effort being poured into the playing. Jarre talks about his music being 'organic' - this performance really captures the difference in his approach to someone like Kraftwerk. The musicians are clearly in their element. Jarre appears to be working hard, Rimbert has clearly been down to the gym, Samard looks like a kid in a toy shop and Perrier just looks like some kind of synth don... a no messing old master who clearly knows what he is doing!

The extra's are good too. Jarre talks you through and demonstrates some of the old synths used on the recording. He even shows his age, admitting his brain doesn't always work! What comes across for me is how much of a genius he is to have worked the original Oxygene out - to figure out how to get the best out of these synths when they were new. Extraordinary! These instrument presentation is a real enthusiasts piece, a bit like watching old men at a steam railway!

I got the DVD which also contains the 3D version of the live performance. For the moment at least, it's a bit of a novelty - I think only one manufacturer (Philips) makes a TV that's designed to play it properly. However, for those with normal tv's the DVD is packed with two pairs of 3D glasses. I followed the instructions and tried it on my TV and it didn't really work for me. However I tried it on my MacBook and it did work - and the whole 3D thing adds a whole new dimension to watching this performance. I wouldn't say it works without flaw (the 3D works best on the motionless instruments rather then on the musicians actually playing them, and the knobs and buttons of the instruments don't come out too well), but you can see what Jarre is trying to do and it's another step into the future.

All in all this is an essential DVD which reasserts Jarre's important role in the development of electronic music. It carries with it hopes that Jarre has 'sorted himself out' and his next new album will be a return to the genius of his older work.

Quick review:

Prelude - 5/10 - My least favorite part. The very beginning was neat but most of it was quite boring.
Oxygene I - 9/10 - Didn't impress me that much until the middle part... never been this glorious before :shock:
Oxygene II - 9/10 - Very neat version, but I've never been that big fan of this track so I don't have much else to say.
Oxygene III - 9/10 - Best version of this track (in fact... 3rd version if you count the La Concorde "performance") ever, even Jarre's Theremin playing fit the track :nod:
Variation I - 8/10 - It's like something like this should have been between Oxygene III and IV since 1976... albeit reusing the Oxygene 2 sequence was somewhat "cheap"
Oxygene IV - 8/10 - Great as a live performance, but I've always liked the PLD version more than the original track :p:
Variation II - 7/10 - Didn't dislike it, but I actually don't remember what it sounded like at the moment :P
Oxygene V - 8/10 - Great version, albeit not as good as the Oxygene Tour one ;)
Variation III - 9/10 - Best of the new tracks and fits the gap between O5 and O6 perfectly. Waited for something like this since Metamorphoses, really 8)
Oxygene VI - 7.5/10 - Not bad, but I think the ending could have had something a bit more special than the same old EKS effects...

Extras - 9/10 - Really great extras, I actually felt interested in the content when watching them :p:

Overall - 9/10 - A solid release, definitely worth getting if you're a fan, becoming one or a potential one. :P

However, the camera angles were kind of frustrating at times. At some parts where they could have focused more on the playing, they didn't. Mm'hmm.

I've been in contact with Emi Music Netherlands today, they informed me about production problems for the limited edition, hence the fact that not every shop has it yet. According to them the limited edition won't be in the shops before this weekend. They mentioned that the production problems are in whole Europe.
